Hi, I have a Toughbook CF-30 MK3 with AD1883 Audio Card. The sound does go through the headphone port but not the front speaker. When I reinstall pulseaudio it works till i restart and I dont want to have to reinstall everytime I restart the computer. How can I fix this? It really is anoying, I have looked every where and have tried diffrent ways to fix it with no luck. Any help will be much appreciated. Also, I am using Debian Linux. Thank you

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook forum. I wish I could help you but Linux I do not know but we do have a few members on here that can help you. Most likely later on or tomorrow.

First thing is to try reset BIOS to defaults.
Doubt that it will cure the problem.

Pretty sure this is the correct sequence.
Then pull the battery, disconnect the ac adapter, pull the drives, hold the power button ON for 30 seconds.
Plug it in without the battery first, then restart and insert the battery.

If this all fails, Odds are the sound was muted in Windows. Only cure is to start Windows and unmute the sound and increase the volume, Then you can run Linux and sound will work normally.

I know it sounds bizarre but for some reason if sound is muted in one OS the other will not properly unmute it.

There are posts here about this issue.

i scanned that linked thread ... most likely missed something .
most of the modern headphone/internal/rear jack/speaker switching is done via a "current sense" ... when you plug a device in , there is a small amount of current flow and this triggers a response from the software in charge of such matters .
of course , the correct "driver" is needed and is usually included in the software for the audio .

what can happen is that the settings from one side are not saved/seen by the other side and the audio will not be denoted or routed correctly .

a look at the jacks on most modern comps will confirm this ... there are only just enough wires for R/L/GND .

with the older types that use a built in set of disconnect contacts (not to be confused with a *switch* per se) , this can "confuse" the software .

So is there a way to fix it? This morning (I left my toughbook running all night) the sound decided to work but would click when muting or unmuting. I made sure it was unmuted and restart the system. But, It did not come back on. Wonder why it did that for?

I will PM Jeff and see if he will join in.
he knows much more about Linux on CF30's than I do.

Here is the proper way to reset the BIOS. I was close.

Pull power and battery...hold switch on to drain residuals from motherboard.
Attach power cord. No battery yet. (because why is battery uses acpi. We want the thing to have very little to think about)
    Boot
    F2 to bios.
    F9 to set defaults.

This thread talks about Linux sound issues and possible solutions.

Oh wow I remember that thread. I don't think we got it 100% resolved in the end. But I run Debian on my CF-30 as well and don't have this problem. I'd suggest running through the sliders and mutes in alsamixer

Thanks for link didnt work though but at least i figured out to get the sound working by putting to sleep

Well I guess being the problem has been resolved in linux already that maybe when I reinstall later (when I can afford a bigger hardrive) I will try to see if it helps. Also, are you using pulseaudio? Well at least I can get the sound working this way for now.

So whatever audio is included with Zorin.

Well more than likely it sounds like when i am able to reinstall linux and i am going to switch from parrot to zorin and install kali tools manual. Thanks for the help and info it may just be the way parrot is setup. It is known to be buggy. thanks everyone for the help and I will keep using the sleep mode to enable it till i get things done.

    Take a look at
    Code:
    man alsamixer
I messed with this last night. Did not find a definitive answer. Of the three main distros I am playing with I think Zorin was the only one not requiring tweaks. (Mint 18.1, AntiX MX-16, Zorin)

Sound is disabled by default in some distros. It's hard to find anyone to commit to what to do about sound.

    Do you have
    Code:
    pavucontrol
    # Zorin 12 does not.

This very worth a read: https://wiki.debian.org/ALSA

als.png Alsamixer has "hidden" controls. I think F5 shows them all.

One of my units would play speakers when headphone was un-muted. Once that was saved on shut-down it seems to work fairly well.

"M" toggles mute/ un-mute. right arrow shows extra choices.

Why not install a persistent version of Zorin on a mini-USB. (8 GB or larger)It will fit in the back door with the door shut. Pull the hard drive and it will boot first. (or set it to boot first in bios)
Persistent disks take a bit longer to boot as they are writing your personal settings to ram...this one about 997Mb. Second boot is much quicker.
Stick a loop of dental floss through the hole for a handle. They are hard to grab.

Ya I might do that because I have been doing research and am going to try to install a 5tb drive in my cf-30 mk3. But that will take time to be able to. Might just order a 64gb usb flash drive to hold me over.

    5tb SSHD:

Need the memory just for data backup if wondering. I have hardrives laying around I need to back up.

Unless you really need all that storage, consider getting an SSD instead. The performance difference between them and spinners is staggering on CF-30s, especially with Linux.

I need at least 2tb of it. I have a lot of stuff that you can not get anymore and I dont want to have to lug a hardrive around. Trust me If I had 400 - 500 dollars I would get ssd. But I did notice Bob Johnson's Refurbs offer the sshd hybrid as a hard drive upgrade option.

Quick off subject question while I am thinking about it. Will these work with the cf-30 mk3?

    8gb Ram:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009ELZ37...TF8&colid=26VOGRJSO1195&coliid=I2AG6YBVX8YHJO

and not a big concern but just curios if this creative labs card will be short enough to close the hatch:

Door will not close with that sound card.

Intel 5200//5300//6250 cards will work in a CF30.
So a 5150 should work. I do not know about the WiMax on the card. BIOS may not like WiMax.
A different card will probably NOT show in the BIOS. But they work anyway.
You will need to do the pin 20 mod.

There is a thread here on CF30 ram. You will need to search for it. Post was by user "Azrial"

Is WiMax even a thing these days? Anyway if you need WWAN, consider using the WWAN sled if yours is so equipped and get a Panasonic approved module.

I got lucky with an UNSUPPORTED non-Panasonic LTE Sierra aircard and was able to pull down almost 100 mbps. I don't recommend trying non pana cards unless you like to tinker and throw money around.

?The best Intel card is a 5300 or 6300.
    I know a 5300 will work.
You just need to add a third antenna.

Really great non Intel performance comes from a SR71E

Actually I just noticed you said the 6250 works and it is abgn with only 2 antenna. Also the 20 pin mod is just tape over pin 20 right? If so I may just get the 6250 because it has been tested. Thanks again Shawn

if that is the case , then no .

i have used the antenna/coax from junker laptops and placed them away from the cast Mg/Al case (a few mm will work) .

I do the best of both with the CF52. The same is possible on a CF30.
I put a HDD adapter in the DVD bay. I use a large storage drive in that. I put the SSD in the main caddy.
Only difference is the CF52 uses a SATA DVD and the CF30 uses a PATA DVD.

SATA does hotswap. Not sure about PATA.

Thank you CWB32 for pushing me to look into it. You are right this thing is like the first solid state drives, still unstable. I think I will buy a 250gb SSD. I have thought about doing that Shawn but I think I may see about a rugged case for an 2.5 hdd. But, If you happen to have a link for a PATA case for the dvd drive let me know otherwise I can look in to it later. Also, Thanks for all the help. Now I just have to figure out how to bypass the filter for the cell antenna wanted to insert a sdr in the wwan bay like

Also, one more question on deciding for the ssd not for sure which is better

i have had very good luck with the samsung evo series ... as have many others .
i have bought several of the used samsung drives ... all ok .
i shy away from amazon and go with sneezebay .

yep ... as much as a dvd/cd burner-reader is used these days , an external usb type is ok .
i can't remember if the '30 will read the/a usb drive formatted with an iso (os installation) on boot .

    I am using a persistent mini-USB MX-16.
CF-31 MK2 with Interlink Versapad. Not Synaptics as most others are.
Guess what... no sound. Cured with:
    Code:
    tough@Tough:~
    $ alsactl init
    Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Intel CougarPoint HDMI" "HDA:10ec0269,10f70600,00100100 HDA:80862805,80860101,00100000" "0x10f7" "0x8338"
Hardware is initialized using a generic method

The other thing I found was
    Code:
    tough@Tough:~
    $ vigr

One wiki recommended that user Not be on the audio list. Open vigr and also vigr -s (with sudo su) and make audio look like the other empty groups. In my case I deleted tough and pulse from the audio group. FWIW I didn't put pulse in there.
Still testing but hey! sound works on re-boot.

    Clear as mud.

I just tried that and the problem is still persisting so I think it is just Parrot os that is not setup right. But, Soon I am going to switch to zorin hoping it fixes the problem

Oh it did change something. One: it is still not booting with sound but, when I shift in to sleep then the sound works. Two: Now when I get the sound on it auto mutes then when I play audio it plays but when I stop it sound disables again. My speakers make a loud click when the sound goes on and off. So that is a little annoying.

I've never had these problems with pulseaudio but I suspect it has something to do with its automute. Can you try
    Code:
    /usr/bin/amixer -c 0 sset "Auto-Mute Mode" Disabled
Or look in the alsamixer to see if you have an Auto-Mute slider that can be disabled.

The article I read on Parrot said it was shipped with no "tools"?

Meanwhile I need to learn a way to save to persistence consistently. I lost what I thought I had. :(

    Still tinkering part time.

I am not going to use parrot anymore myself but what I am going to do is install Zorin Ultimate to get the extra features. Then, I am going to use the Kali Tools tool to install the tools. After that, I am going to install Parrot Anonsurf tool.

    Kali Tool:

    Parrot Anonsurf:

But the main problem is parrot does not have much support. When I go on there chat or form there is very little people to respond to questions. So, If you want tools for Penetration testing I would suggest getting Kali. You can Customize it with a little work and to get all the linux extras just add this repository to synaptic package manager sources: http://docs.kali.org/general-use/kali-linux-sources-list-repositories I believe that is the right place to look.
