I purchased a slot load drive which works fine, i installed win xp using it. The only problem is it makes a noise on pc boot and makes alot of noise when using the disk, its not normal cd noise.
Just wondering if this is normal for a slot load drive?

The two I have are nearly silent in operation; just a faint whirr when loading then I can barely hear it run, even at max speed.

Mine are silent as well!
You must be doing something wrong... -
How could i be doing something wrong, its not hard to put a disk inside

I contacted the seller and let him know. The drive works great, i would just prefer alot less noise than it puts out. -

Try with this, when you replaced the oem dirve(cd rom drive) there are pieces of metal and a conductive foam type piece on its side and on metal bracket support. Reinstall all of those piece to the new CD rom drive to eleminate the noise. Its purpose is to eliminate the noise and minimize vibration created on metal to metal reaction.

I forget what model I have, but it is a slot load. I get a lot of the same noise.

I did not have any extra pieces when i did the swap, i followed TBs instructions. The only thing the stock drive has is 2 brass colored stickers on each side.

If you have to use a hammer, you're doing it wrong.
Try the discs you are using in a conventional laptop drive; pop them on the spindle, then spin by hand without closing the drive to verify whether they are warped.
I had a similar issue with one client after replacing a DVDRW drive; turns out every disc he'd tried was warped. I popped in a new blank disc that I had verified was straight, no problem. I think it was the higher speed the new drive operated at; or perhaps he left the discs in his car in the sun.

Tried brand new disk, same issue

I know that this is going to sound stupid, but are all of the assembly screws tight? After I swapped out my drive I was having a little bit of noise went back and found that I had not snugged the screws as tight as I should have.

I was just having April Fool's fun with you! A buddy of mine used to have the annoying habit of saying that about things that could not possibly be someone's fault!

Thanks for being a good sport! -

I bought one and have the same issues. So I only buy Sony Optiarc Slot-Loads... Which are pretty much silent. But they are hard to find as everything is going SATA these days.

Oh , i totally for got about that. Next thing im gonna forget about Easter and Christmas too.
Yep they are hard to find, i couldnt find them so i just went with the panny. I just hope its not dying, i can live with the noise. -

I looked back through the post and did not see where you have had the unit apart. Have you tried taking it apart to see if there is a part or a piece of something that may be rubbing against the spinning disc? Crap happens and one part may be touching another part just enough to make the noise.

If anyone is looking for a new slot loading drive, here is a good price:

Um.... Until you look at shipping prices.... Raping comes to mind.... Especially for multiple items..... He want to charge me close to $60 to ship 4 to me? I don't think so!

So what would you normally pay for that particular drive? Most of the ones on Ebay are in the $45-55 range, some with shipping, most without. By the time you pay his shipping on four the average price per unit is $51.72, which is less than most I see on the auctions (especially if they do not have free shipping). Isn't $52 a decent price for a new unit, regardless of whether it is coming from Hong Kong or here in the states?

Mine was $30 but it was used

i opened it and cleaned it out with an air duster and now it has alot less noise
