I've had my CF-29 for...about 6 months now?
Last weekend, DC got hit with a freak snowstorm. I had breakfast @ La Madeleine Bakery in Georgetown with CF-29 in hand and the snow was pouring down - wet, sloppy, nasty. The Toughbook got the full brunt of the weather, but when I put it down on the table next to my omelette, opened up the screen, ran my hand across the screen to wipe off the water, booted it up and started typing - I knew I made the right decision.
It was the right decision to go with the Toughbook.
A guy walked by my table and asked - "Hey, is that one of those laptops that you can drop and it'll keep working?" I responded, "Yes, you can drop it, but it'll make the laptop look like crap, so I wouldn't recommend it!"
The features I like the most are the 7 hr battery, magnesium case, heavy duty LCD hinges, carry handle, backlit keyboard, and IP65 rated case.
I also like the swappable media bay and hard drive, although I haven't had a reason to swap the devices yet.

Great story... They are VERY easy to fall in love with... And even easier to starting buying more of them.

Good Deal!
I know that I keep using other brands in the course of my work and I continue to be impressed with just how crappy they all are.
I have been using a Fujitsu in particular as it has Vista on it and I need it for one job but every time I use the keyboard o the Fuji it feels like it could break in half right then!
The quality and toughness of these machines is really in its own class.
I have also been using a T5 compared to the Netbooks out there now and it too smokes them all(and I have tried a lot of them).

Years ago I had a Grid (remember those?) and when my partner got one of the comparatively awesomely powerful CF-25 Toughbooks and asked me if I wanted one, I of course said yes! It was a great little machine, except the drives had been formatted and they had no OS.
Ours did not have CD-ROMs, so I had to install Win98SE2 by using a Laplink cable. We both used our machine long after they were obsolete, because you could take them on scene and they were one less thing to worry about! You knew they were going to work. Eventually, I sold it off and went without a Toughbook for several years.
Then I bought a pallet full of CF-M34 Toughbooks at a government auction! They were just 400MHz P3's but I was able to get XP-Pro to run on them pretty smoothly by bumping the RAM to the Max of 768MB, eliminating unneeded services and newer faster HDD.
I sold them all but one, which I kept for me. It soldiered on for a few years and got a lot of hard use out of in the field. I sold it a few weeks ago and felt like I had cashed in on a friend. But, I have a tough job ahead and knew that once again I needed more CPU Horsepower!
You know the rest of the story! -
Hey I have an extra GRID laptop if anyone needs one!!
It is an EX Porsche corporate machine so it has "historical" value??)
-
you could also use it a bullet shield if any angry dc detectives start brandishing their weapons after a snowball fight
-
lol.
Actually that detective got a bad rap, there were more cops around that drew guns, not just him. Throwing a snowball at a cop is a bad idea, in general. Not much different from throwing anything else at a cop. -
The problem with that situation is that when going through the academy, they teach you to 1) use the least amount of force necessary to eliminate the the threat and 2) always use equivalent force unless forced to take it to the next level. Also, the reason he got pissed was they hit his Tahoe/Suburban with a snowball and instead of just going on, he chose to stop and confront. The kids were wrong for throwing at cars to begin with and he was wrong in immediately confronting them with his weapon out of the holster. When the other officers arrived, they see a fellow officer with his weapon out and, not knowing the situation, they followed suit until they could determine there was no "threat". Not meaning to get on a soapbox here, but having worked a few years in LE and having a lot of friends in LE, i am always compelled to try and give a fair shake to both sides. Merry Christmas!

that was the reason that i heard for the other officers drawing their weapons. they has received a call about a man with a gun (the detective). when they saw it was one of their fellow officers they holstered. Yeah both sides where wrong the goddamn hipsters for throwing at cars and the officer for stopping and overreacting.
Love my CF-29
