    Hi,

I am considering replacing my built-in Gobi-1000 in CF-19KHRCHPG (MK3) which does not work anymore with something newer. Ideally i need just a reliable 3G connection (UMTS/HSxPA), i do not need GPS as the OEM-GPS works fine.

I was thinking of MC8790, can anyone recommend better choice?

Does it contain GPS, but sometimes it's locked out?

And the most important question. Will any MC8790 adapter bought from ebay be compatible with my CF-19?
They are often sold as compatible with "Fujitsu" or "HP", and i know most Gobi 2000 sold on ebay can be firmware-loaded on my computer only under linux. Are there any similar cards that do not require this "transformation" on every boot up and will work in CF-19 MK3? I am using Option Globetrotter HSUPA PCMCIA card on all my CF-W8s, there you have to send one AT-command to the card. After this, it exposes its modem interface everafter. This approach would be very convenient to me.

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook forum

If you going to get one make sure it is for a Toughbook. Other brands will not work or very hard to set up

I would just pull one of the Option Globetrotter cards from the CF-W8's you have and try it..Especially since it's free for you to try and a known card that you like.
As far as I know all GOBI cards require the firmware load on every boot..Seems bizarre to me also...\

Pet peeve request....Can you edit your post into a couple different paragraphs..It's difficult to read..

After reading the original post several times, I see the the Option card is PCMCIA...What is the exact model?....

OPTION GTM380 HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE Multimode PCI Express MiniCard looks to be that Option card in pcmcia form..

I've tried to use GPS on MC8790, but it's unstable and I couldn't rely on it. So it's better to not enable GPS at all.
Also I prefer EU870 cards for GSM. Mobilink seems simpler for me than Sierra 3g watcher. Have not tried them for GPS though.
I'm sure MC8790 cards I had were not from Panasonic laptops.

seems like they are using a FPGA in the design .
the advantage is easier modification of "firmware" ... it is also faster than a software solution/micro processor .
the downside ... they can be a royal PITA to "get right" .

some pertinent *easy to digest* information :

    heh ... the multimeter tests/challenges .
there was one fine unit that would fail catastrophically if the adapter on the end of the meter was not plugged in and run home all the way .
    a real POS-1 .
