My new CF-18 (looks new) just came out of the box. It seems to be everything the seller claimed and then some. Model CF-18DHAMBKM. Of course the first thing it needs is a bigger hard drive, the wiped Fujitsu 40gb is out of there! My first foray inside the caddy exposed a large heater, and inside that the drive is almost completely wrapped in thin foil. Its stuck on pretty well but I can get it off in one piece. I'm going to re-install it but as a matter of curiosity, do I need to? I'm putting in one of my shrinking stock of 60gb HTS Hitachi 7200rpm drives, I'm sure it will be large enough for the uses I will put this little beauty to. Next is the 1gb Crucial stick which also arrived today. So far, I love it, its sooo small but it seems it will be a lot more useful than my CF-M34 which sadly will probably be the next subject of the shop clean out. In put please.

Yes, take the time and put the heater back

60gb is huge , so that will work fine

The screen size and brightness in compairison to the cf-m34 is a big improvement

    Alex,
I understand the heater, I'm wondering about the foil. Its really like aluminum foil and its wrapped around the drive and kinda glued on, then the heater slips around the foil wrapped drive. Is the foil part of the heater system? I've never seen anything like it before. Thanks,

    Alex,
I think I agree unless its for shielding for the WWAN which is allegedly in there somewhere?

I mean the foil is for more spreading of the heat to the hdd and maybe as an shield (if ur working in a nuclear power plant :)

I was thinking the same thing... It may be a heat sink. I'd put it back in as you found it or as close as possible... You never know when you'll take that trip to the Arctic! ;)

    Rick,
If you lived in New England this winter you'd think you were in the Arctic. The no global warning types are having a ball on talk radio. I'm putting it back and taking pictures for Rob to host if he wants.

I am pretty sure you gonna love this unit, as I am, specially when you are on travelling. Its portability and ruggedness. I know your not obs... to any modification like the gps setup but its pretty cool when you have on it.

    TEQ,
On this one I might think about internal GPS. It is actually something you can carry around without a mule, and you can use it flat. Lugging around a laptop open like a dead clam doesn't get it.
