Screenshot.png Screenshot at 2017-08-17 08:15:21.png I've always loved the look of OSX, (but not the dearth of software that appeals to me).
I'm pretty happy with Ubuntu Mate Linux with the OSX look using the package from Sourceforge:

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/macbuntu/files/latest/download

Just extract it, go into the extracted folder, and run the install.sh
(sudo, and don't forget to use the -force flag).

If using Ubuntu Mate, go to Control Panel > Look and Feel and select your theme in "Appearance", and move Titlebar buttons to the left in "Windows"

Also working well in MX 16.1 Linux

    Top screenshot is MX

What size should the sourceforge file be?

    I get a a g2gm.tar.gz file that is 10.6kb

If I explore, I file an entire iso that is 749mb

I really do not care for sourceforge.....ugh

Download on a Linux machine and it is 40mb
Download on a Windows machine and it is 10kb.

    I hate sourceforge
Or more the users...Put the darn thing in a file format that everyone can download without issues.

Linux people can be so frustrating and narrow thinking....Why would anyone using a Windows box ever want to download the Linux install bits.....UGH...

    mx 16

    terminal

    sudo install.sh no joy
    sudo install.sh -force no joy

People wonder why I have such an attitude over Linux. Why not a SIMPLE click and install?
Why such ridiculous hoops to do ANYTHING?

Doesn't Linux have executable files? Why bother to program stuff if you never finish it?

    Found the syntax on TBT

    sudo ./install.sh -force

    Checking Ubuntu version
    System not supported

drop the sudo on mx 16 and it seems to install.

Ha Ha ha Ha Ha -----------------------------------
Reboot after install and it ALL returns to standard as if Macbuntu was never installed....

lol, high requirements for some stuff that someone probably wrote in in undies and literally gave a way for free, with a license that states stuff like "not fit for any purpose" (assuming its gpl/bsd/mit licensed)

Require that it actually does something other than imitate a virus.

Now I need to format the entire drive. Easier to do that than clean up this leftover mess.

    Understood the free bit.
But I am done with Linux...No thanks
Too frustrating, too buggy, too many hoops to get general functionality out of it.
    I tried, I really tried

I tried it for about a year on this CF 53.
I can't mentally deal with the frustration any more. I know I have frustration issues now, but enough is enough.
I will put the Win7 drive back in.
A new theme wrote by a dude in his basement in his underwear and given away will still install on Win7 easily in 10 minutes with 3 clicks.
Being free software is NOT a valid excuse for the Linux crowd in my book. Claiming in the license that it is crap and useless is a cop out to not finish the work.

Oh and I tried to remove grub after mx16 installed it. Ha Ha ha ha..........

    Every OS wastes your time,
from the desktop to the lap,
    Everything since the abacus,
    Just a bunch of crap.

    From Microsoft, to Macintosh,
    to lih-lie-lih-lie... nux.
    Every computer crashes,
    'cause every OS sucks.

    Shawn:

Really sorry you have had a bad experience with Linux. It's really weird, but am ready to leave Windows behind for the exact same reasons.

    RANT:
MS will drop support for Windows 7 in January 2020 (only a couple years away) So Windows 7 "upgraded" to Windows 10 for longevity reasons:

After over a year, MS Streets and Trips 2013 suddenly does not work no matter how many times I reinstall, or what I try. It's abandoned by MS in 2015, so no help from MS. MS Office 2016 suddenly told me it was not activated. When I tried to activate it, it told me it was installed too many times. Had to call MS and they finally got it working. Then Office started opening only in compatibility mode. Can't save files. On clean install, everything works better, but I had to call MS again, because Windows 10 would not activate. They finally issued a new license key, because they could not get it to activate either. My software to re-encode MP4 to MPEG to burn to DVDs, takes forever, then produces un-usable MPEGs. It used to work. Windows 10 does not seem to wake printer up from sleep. I have to turn printer off and back on again to print. So does my husband with his Win10 laptop, and with Win10 desktop. There is no way to disable sleep on printer. Updating drivers does not help. When I use Linux, printer just works!
EDIT: Oh! and Windows runs hotter. If I am trying to encode video, temps go up to 103 C! Encoding in Linux, temps go to 85C. Fan rarely comes on in Linux.

Ubuntu 16.04 just works on CF-31 MK3. No problem with Versapad either. Took a little effort to get gpsd working. (Except that accursed Gobi2000 which I finally swapped with an MC7750, which works fine).

    LinuxMint 18.2 just works on CF-31 MK1 (Except Gobi2000.)

I installed MX on CF-31 MK1, and it was..... unimpressive. Really, really slow, so I reinstalled it again. (Too many of our Linux people seem to like it to not try harder.) Same thing: slow! I put LinuxMint 18.2, and bang! It was speedy and just worked (except the Gobi2000 that I swapped from CF-31 MK3.) I re-downloaded MX from a different server, and tried MX again and this time, it is fast like it should be. It seems more finicky than Ubuntu. It barfed when I tried to use auto-login, but was OK when I went back to regular login. It will take some getting used to. I guess I am just a gnome fan, and will likely eventually go back to LinuxMint or Ubuntu on this computer.

One more thing, to get grub and everything else off disk,
boot from Windows DVD, and (from command prompt) type:

    diskpart

    list disk

select disk (whichever one you want to nuke)

    clean

This will put disk back to like new, unformatted without any boot stuff.

grub is notorious ... from what i have read while looking for a way to get rid of it on a dual boot install that i wanted to go back to a single OS on .
by the time i found relevant information , tried a couple of things and had it pooch the drive to a non-bootable state ...
it would have been quicker to just wipe the drive and start over with a fresh install of W7 .
maybe some individuals with more experience have no problems but when i finally said "no more dual boots" it was the third time that it had happened .

i wonder if the slow MX install was due to an older version dl'ed from that particular server ?

Sorry you all can't get MX-16.1 to work for you.
I'm using the newest version on the 53, 52, 29,and like it much.
But, I've tried many flavors and to each their own...
I have a persistent Peppermint USB working (thanks Kerry) and also Manjaro...

    MX 16 loaded and worked.
The issues came up when I attempted to load the Macbuntu skin.

    Shawn,

Don't really know if it will help, but if you boot from MX install disk, click on TeePee in box icon, go to MX Tools, then (in Maintenance section) there is a Boot Repair.

Sounds too good to be true, so.... at your own risk

First off I really like this post. Your reason for using Linux is only slightly different from mine.
One thing I might add is when I turn on a computer to use the GPS I don't need it to decide to update Windows. I may actually need the GPS for fire and/or rescue purposes........and if I need it I need it now!

Here is my CF-53J with Gobi2000. Note it is NOT Xenial Xerus.

Yes MX-16 can be a bit twitchy but I am using "MX Snapshot" USB sticks. IOW a iso written of a working system. Any tweaks I make are handed on to the next self created .iso.

That's probably enough for now. :D Just needed to know about the MC5725....thinking of recommending it to staffyman.

Do you have a picture of the 5725? I'm interested in getting one but want to confirm the numbers (IOW toughbook compatible)?

    Thanks,
