EDIT- Hmm...it is recognizing the new HDD (160gigs) in BIOS.

EDIT2- I have CD set first in the Boot menu. Hmm.

Edit3- Okay, disabled Boot from LAN...now just says Operating system not found.

Is there a reason why it's not booting from the USB drive (external CD drive)?

Under the boot menu, it does not say anything about a USB device...?

This is an external USB CD drive. I'm not sure what you mean by "original CD drive caddy."

Nope, I have never installed an OS this way. I am truly lost.

    Thanks,

    Brian

    Brewmeister,
Search the forum. There have been very detailed discussions for booting most models without the media bay cd drive. I can't remember anyone being successful booting from a USB drive on any of the threads I have read.

I have used built-in cd drives for 10 years originaly on a cf-25
    Makes it real easy
If not you have to fuss around loading in another computer or cloning

Jeez, what a bummer. I hardly ever use my CD drive on my current laptop (can't think of the last time I've used it) and plunking down $100 for something that I'll only use once in a while is just not cost effective.

Besides purchasing the drive, do I have any other options? Anyone in the Austin/Texas area who has a drive that I could borrow (use on location, no fear)?

    Thanks,

    Brian

If you buy a drive you can sell it back on ebay and maybe make a profit.

why not just buy a $15 USB enclosure and use an old desktop CD/DVD drive? I have an even cheaper one, where it's a USB cable with IDE/SATA ends on it, used mainly for testing purposes.

try Smart Boot Manager. http://btmgr.sourceforge.net It's a boot manager that loads into your HD or a floppy, and will then attempt to recognize your USB CD/DVD drive.

Alternatively, a CDR made bootable using Nero's .bin image will also load up usb drivers and read NTFS drives as well.

    Side note:
I just realized that although the CF-73's BIOS does not list USB devices, a CF-VFDU03 (Panny's USB FDD) will boot nonetheless if I opt for floppy as 1st boot... not that it will help brewmeister in any way

29s do not boot to usb, you may have to break down, buy the drive, and resell it after your done.
