My son needs something better than the cheap PC mic he has been using to record on the our CF-28 laptop. Just the spoken word, not singing.
Either a handheld or a headset-mic type is fine - he just needs better quality - but not absurdly expensive. It does not have to be ruggedized as he is doing the recording at home.
Anyone have experience specific to the CF-28 with external mics?
Thanks! doc

I honestly don't think it will matter which mic you go for as long as it has a standard interface (it's a headphone jack like you would get on any pair of headphones/earphones) - If he's been using a mic already without issue then simply buy a higher quality mic. You can get high quality mics with usb interfaces, i have one of these but i use it for recording vocals for songs and doing podcasts, i wouldn't recommend spending more than 20/30 dollars on a mic from a pc store, the differences won't be that noticable.

OK, thanks! Does the CF-28 prefer a high or low impedance mic?

Again i'd be surprised if either made a difference if your son is only recording voice and not singing into it, i don't understand high/low impedance too well but i believe you only need low if you're running large cabling like at a gig... could be wrong though! Perhaps there are some 28 users who are more read up on the onboard sound card who can advise further...`

It is over-hyped but what are your thoughts about this one? http://www.mpja.com/prodinfo.asp?number=17282+MK
Or should I get him a mic designed for communications like one used in Amateur Radio?
Knowing the impedance at the mic jack would really help - that data is not in the manual that I have. -
for what he wants to use it for i would be surprised if you guys weren't happy with the results from that mic and for less than a tenner that's great - my usb mic cost me £60 ($80-$90?) so i think that's a very reasonable price.
hopefully someone else can help with your question on impedance.
