Is there a way to determine if your TB was Military or Police issue at one time? also, I have the 600 MGz CPU (MkI) I've been told that I cannot install the CD/DVD drive into the MkI as it will not function, but reading some of the really old posts here, some have installed it and it played DVD's just fine........

I don't think your serial number works the same way as a VIN on your car.

I just checked the "My Computer" and I see DVD/CD ROM. So, can I assume that I can play DVD's with the correct optical drive? Right now I only have a CD-ROM.

Thanks! I'll check on ebay and see if I can find a CD/DVD Drive. Did you have to add any programs or did you just slide in the drive?

You will need a codec to play DVD movies which usually comes with software such as WinDVD or PowerDVD players. You may be able to find free players on the Internets.

OK here is what I came up with.
I can watch DVDs on my old CF-27 MK2.
It has a 300 MHz Pentium II Processor and 320 MB of ram.
I am using an old version of Power DVD and I am watching a retail version
of Blade Runner in Wide screen.
So from this YES your CF-28 600 MHz unit WILL play DVDs
Go here and read how to In stall a DVD drive in you CD caddy and
    watch movies.

Yes they do but do you want to spend $25.00 for just a new drive or $100.00 for a old drive/media bay caddy.

Okay, I'll do the mod. Whats the best free DVD codec/player? I see the one on ebay, would I still have to mod it even if it comes with a disc?

I snatched intervideo win dvd 4 from a CF-73 Recovery CD and Microsoft visual c ++ from the M$ website. The new intervideo was a free trial and I like the older version better.

The free VLC Media player should fulfil your needs, it can play CDs, Video CDs, Super Video CDs, DVDs etc, plus common and some less common video formats.
    Its worth checking out, www.videolan.org/vlc/

I tried VLC and K-Lite CODEC pack on my Mk1; neither would run worth a dang under XP and I was not willing to go back to 2K to free up the memory needed.

I've never liked VLC for DVD or any MPEG media; it does a video artifacting thing where things move fast and the edges look all squiggly lines. Drives me absolutely batsh!t. For a small player that will play almost anything it's great; it just sucks on MPEG video. The K-Lite Codec pack is tons better and not much larger.

I feel the same way about GOM player. I works with about any video file I've found, but once in a while it just runs up against something that stumps it and requests a codec update. All free. I've installed it in everything here. ;)
