Will a mini pci-e ssd work with a newer Toughbook like a CF-52 mk3 or CF-C1 mk2? I'm thinking of replacing a the Gobi with a ssd but want to know if anyone has tried it. Here's a ebay link to what I'm looking at.

No It will not work. The WWAN and WLAN slots work for communication cards only. They are not a full pci-e slot. An SSD will work to replace the main HDD.
-
the MiniPCIe slot needs either to be configured by the BIOS or hardwired for mSATA function, in order to work with that kind of SSD. I don't think there is any Panasonic like that.
Lenovos on the other hand, have support for that, from 2-3 years ago. I have successfully installed a 128GB MyDigital SSD in a W520. -
Glad I didn't waste my money. Next question - Would I be able to use a expresscard ssd with a pcmcia adapter for a Cf-C1. I really would like to have a ssd drive to run my os but also need a conventional hdd for large amounts of space.

I'm not sure the PC Card slot is bootable (with a Compact Flash card / expresscard ssd in a pcmcia adapter).
I never saw that option in the mk1 BIOS, but on the other hand, I didn't have a pccard flash card to try it on.
PS
I remember seeing the CF boot option some good years before, on a Toshiba Portege (R100?) Pentium M laptop. -
I think the best solution for that would be to get a ssd for your main drive then look into a media bay drive.
-
The pci-e slot is limited by hardware. It's not a real pci e slot. USB only interface on that connector. -
Unfortunately the CF-C1 doesn't have a media bay so it looks like the only option is a pcmcia adapter with a expresscard ssd. I know it's a long way to go for two drives but if it works I'm willing to do it.

That is a great idea. I tried it but the bios in my machine doesn't recognize the SD card as a bootable device. That makes me wonder if it will see the expresscard ssd.

Hey,
I had a great idea. Why not buy a SSHD hybrid. They have 8 gigs of SSD and 1TB HDD 64mb cache, they are just as fast as SSD's and cost $140 for the 2.5 form factor... That is what My Cf-30 is getting next week.... -

Myself I am going to hold off on the SSHD hybrid. Some of the reviews are not that good like this one

they may be as fast as the SSD's, but remember that
1) the data you're reading may not be in that 8GB, at the time you want to read it and/or may not fit in 8gb
2) AFAIR that 8GB is *only* for reads, not writesRazzi likes this. -
I have two hard drives with caddy(s) for my CF-C1. One with the SSD has has Linux Mint running while the other is a large capacity hard drive running Win7. I just pop in the one I'd like to use and good to go.
