The new 28 came today. Overall it's exactly what the seller on Ebay said it would be. The only exception is a small hole drilled in the PCMCIA cover.

The 28 only has the 56K modem jack on the outside. I need to add the ethernet/LAN jack. I'm looking for ideas on where to find such a beast. Or should I just call Heartland and see what they have.

Yeah - I think you've got a bit of a Frankenstein there. I've only ever seen MODEM only on a Mk1, every Mk2 or Mk3 I've ever seen has both. I'd guess someone robbed the panel for another unit & filled the hole with a panel from a Mk1.

This is of course MY experience only; your mileage may vary.

I've picked up a couple of (13.3") Mk2's with only the modem port. The side piece though looks like it could still accept the NIC. The hard plastic of the part has cutouts for the NIC and the wifi patch attenna, with just a thinner plastic cover over the cutouts. Looks like a NIC jack and cable could be added to the part fairly easily. That's why I was looking for some a few weeks ago. All I could fine would be castoffs from other laptops, but it looks like the connector for the min-pci card is standard, so I'm hoping to sind some to patch in later.

Some mark 2s don't have LAN but all of the non-lan 28s are set up to add a LAN jack later on. Those side cover things have the slot already and just have a sticker covering up the hole. It just needs the jack and a card.

I have the 3 Com combo cards so I guess then I would just need the jack and the cable. I looked up my model # in the Toughbook Config and it shows that it was shipped with the 56K only. It's still a nice one though. It doesn't even show any wear on the bottom. Looks like it lead a very pampered life.

Try these model numbers if you try Heartland....
LAN Jack Cover Label ~ DFGX0293ZA-0 - Should be around $2
    LAN Jack ~ DFJS663YA - Should be around $20

    Try those...

By the way... I had/ave a bunch of the modem only types.

I bought a few of the panels with the pcb on them from Linc, I haven't received them yet though. I know alot of people don' want the modem but it makes a great fax system once you get the fax server software.

BIZZACKLY why I wanted to keep the MODEM... that, & I use my TB to troubleshoot standalone data collection mini-servers for one of my bigger clients, & some of those are pretty remote, connecting by dialup. Good thing to verify if it's a line problem or a smoked MODEM in the mini-server.
