have a cf72 toughbook laptop - screen flickers when in turn it on then goes off. Tried plugging into external monitor - no picture there either - so i'm guessing its not the LCD panel that is bad ...

    Likely guess the inverter??

anyone had this problem, possible solution?

thanks for your help - had been a great laptop, i'd like to keep it around ...

Does the entire laptop turn off, or does the screen just go black? If the inverter goes into shutdown, very often you can just make out your desktop (make sure you wait long enough for it to have booted normally) by shining a flashlight on the screen. If it shorts out internally, it CAN cause the whole laptop to go into shutdown for overcurrent protection.

the ccfl tube can cause the same issue. if connecting to a remote monitor you have to push fn+F3 a couple times to switch the video output. hope this might help

Hey... What 48User said! Try the Fn+F3 and see if that works. Other than that you could try for the inverter but I don't think that controls the external monitor. (Someone correct me if I am wrong...) It may be your video card/chip.

If you are looking for the inverter you might want this... The Service Manual will tell you where it is! You didn't specify what the model number was so I gavce you an average Mk3 model. Hope this helps!
