I was looking at Ohlips' eBay auction (I believe I read the thread on how he built it here somewhere).

My 18 doesn't have that set of switches. It looks like an external way to turn the wifi card on and off.

Where would that fit? Is there a part number for it?

How can you tell if there is a broadband card installed? I cracked the case (wow, that was straightforward), but I couldn't make a definite ID.

I found the GPS board, it plugs into something called a RF board (p/n DFUP1281ZA).

I found the modem (T60M283.22), cutting off the .22, the googler says:

    Ambit 56k modem board

And, I found the wifi board (Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG) (with no outboard button array).

I also found a small blue coax that terminates into a piece of shrinkwrap, and taped to a plastic "window" in the left rear next to the audio jacks. What that do?

    Computer is 18DDAZAMM... Thanks!!

    Your specs

Pentium M 1.1GHz(Centrino), 10.4" XGA Transmissive with Digitizer, 40GB HDD, 256MB RAM, Intel 802.11b+g WLAN, GPS, Dual pass through antenna, Win XP Tablet PC

The spare wire is the antenna wire for an optional Bluetooth module

The switch panel on the front is for the optional wwan module
With that if you pay a monthly fee with a cellular provider , allows internet access away from home

Ok! the external switch that you have seen is for WWAN as the same on cf-29 and cf-28 if your unit has wwan builtin. It will be install at the front side near the power buttom of cf-18. RF board what you called as the same as daughterboard where the modem of WWAN, gps and bluetooth mounted
The blue coax cable is for bluetooth and the gray one is for WWAN. All cf-18 has a provision or I say wireless ready installed
