You never know what you may get when you buy a used clean laptop from a seller on craigslist. I had bought from him in the past for a power cord. This time he was selling this cf-30. It worked much better then my old cf-29. I did not know it as the time, the OS it came with was windows 10 but was a licence from a HP. Its been years since buying Windows OS, but does Microsoft still sell its OEM disk as holographic disk or do they sell the factory sold software on thumb drives?

Anyway, I may need to buy a new version of Windows 7. What about Windows 8? Once I buy the OS, and install all the appropriate applications, then I will image it to a new hard drive in the event the old OS Dies.

Who is selling windows 7 or 8 for the Cf-29? I am in Vancouver so it can be shipped.

Well it seems he used a Windows 7 from a HP so he could get the free upgrade. It's not the first time I have heard of it and it won't be the last :). You want a W7 disk for a CF-29 or did you mean for your new 30? What's the full model number of the 30?

Never used it but they say W8.1 is better but on a 30 the drivers will take some work since Panasonic has none for the 30.

An HP disk will work fine as long as you install the proper drivers after Windows is done installing. I use a Dell disk when I don't have a factory Panasonic recovery disk.
It will not auto activate when you use another brand install disk. You must manually enter the serial number from a valid COA.

Tread lightly guys. We are getting close to a forbidden subject on this forum.

    yeppers ... 'nuff said .

    on W8.1 ...
in my opinion , forget it ... stick with W7 .
W10 is in the same category .
with both , i cannot see any advantages over W7 , unless you like a non-productive gui/desktop environment designed by the scramble wound rejects from fisher/price .

I have read posting on this site for a very long time and could always find my answers with out asking any questions lol
Then any time that I could answer a question for someone I am always to late
    But
    I have a stupid questions
1 Why would you need a Panasonic Windows disk when any works? Besides it saying Dell or HP lol

    2 do they make a Windows 7 Pro disk for a cf-30 MK1 or MK2 ? I could never find one

3 I always pop a new caddy in my cf-30 MK3 do a install then take it out and pop it in the 1 or 2 then upgrade bios and drivers for 1 and drivers for 2 even though there are no conflicts on the 2 is there a better way?

Sorry for going on and on lol

"Why would you need a Panasonic Windows disk when any basically works?"
    CFA

a big advantage is the in the *driver* and *other specific software* areas .
some of this software has to be written to run on a panasonic machine .
there are a couple of other items as well .

to reiterate ... almost dancin' on a razor blade here .

    Panasonic disk :
    Auto activates windoze
    No COA input needed
Installs drivers correctly- try manually installing individual drivers on a CF19. YIKES
Newer models creates a recovery partition
Able to switch between 32bit and 64bit (RTFM to the future readers) (I won't explain it if you are too lazy to read.)
Installed and done in 20minutes or less.

    Off brand disks :
Manual COA serial input and activation
    NO drivers
    No recovery partition
An hour or two by the time you are done installing drivers.

Windows 10 ISO, USB flash drive, Panasonic drivers bundle:
    - Superfast and much more comfortable OS
    - No more slow (1-2 days for Windows 7) Windows updates after recovery disk. Works well immediately :)

Ask someone to input COA located underneath your own Toughbook. I'm ready to input them 100 times per day for a small salary. USD 1 per 1 COA is ok :)

    Rant coming on....
I am not going to get sucked in any further into an argument of win7 over win 10. Nor an argument over recovery disks or generic disks. That would be a waste of my time. My time is valuable. Other peoples time may not be as important.
I really don't care if all of you triple boot with win 3.11, OS/2 and OSX on the things. Go ahead hack in a floppy drive and boot MS DOS if it floats your boat. C:\fdisk C:\dir C:\format c: /s ......etc ...
The fastest to install, most reliable, best tested, and only OS fully supported by Panasonic is the one from a recovery disk. Period. I am not talking about updates or tweaking.
In all the years I have been on the board, I have NEVER EVER seen one post regretting the purchase of the factory recovery disk. NEVER....
However, I have read dozens of posts stating buying the recovery disk was the best choice they made.

Every other day there is a thread started on here about a CF something with a non original OS that does not work completely right. Sound, front buttons, over heating, wwan, SD card readers, etc, etc, etc.. Don't get me started on the half baked Linux crapola installs. Lets not think about the half a**ed win whatever 64 bit installs. The ones with missing and unavailable drivers.
I want my Toughbook to work 100% of the time with zero issues in ALL conditions. That comes from a Panasonic tuned and tested OS.

I'm done. I won't bother talking to deaf ears any further.

on sunday a friend of mine that does a lot of field work (literally digging and sifting through dirt) stopped by to drop off a dead monitor .
i built up a '30 for him over a year ago and he uses it literally 6 days a week , 12 hours a day .
he has a data connection via WLAN that is used a few times a week out in the field or at a motel that does not have a connection .
he is many times required to stay in the field or in some god-forsaken podunk town in minnesota , wisconsin , north dakota or south dakota where a failure of the '30 would mean lost "critical" time .
i asked him how it was working out now that the *honeymoon* was over ...
    he said :
"great ! i toss it in the truck and go . in the field i have sat and dropped stuff on the machine when it was closed ... no problems . i have left it sitting in the rain and snow (forgot it in the back of the pickup) bouncing through the field on the way back to the motel or lab van ... at least it gets cleaned that way ."
normally i would cringe at such treatment of a laptop , but his story actually gives me valuable data/feedback that says if one does not do things by half measures , one can expect decent results .
the way i see it is this :
    he is my friend
he is picky and precise (in his work and somewhat in other areas)
he needed something that will work in very adverse (at times) conditions
my name might as well be emblazoned on that '30 as i stake my reputation and responsibility on it (see the first statement)

    sooo ...
this is what happened when i followed the suggestions in these forums .
i will admit to prior experience in matters of "reliability" and have a decent idea of what it takes to "make the grade" .
some of the people that come in here do not have as much *real world* experience as some of us .
each of has our very own "learning curve" that we must go through ... no one else can do it for us and you don't pull it out of a box of crackerjack .

Thus why I have a pile of recovery disc's all the way up tp CF-53,CF-H2 and CF-C2. All the CF-30 flavors and several CF-31's.Try getting a CF-C1 to run correctly without the disc, nope. Just did 3 brand new CF-19Mk2's for a sale...easy. :D
