My CF-52 wont boot without RAM.
Is that usual with all TB's or just certain models?

Remember the 52 has no onboard memory. Let me guess all you get is a beep beep..memory error.

I'm wondering if the same is true for the CF-18, CF-29 and CF-73.

The CF-18, 29 and 73 all have some onboard ram. 18 and 29 had either 256 or 512 onboard. I have two Mk's of CF-73 and they both have 512mb ram. Not sure if all of the 73's are 512 or not.

I'm cruising ebay and have found some that say they don't boot. I was wondering if it's just that they've removed the on-board RAM. Would that result in a no boot? Is the on-board RAM removable and under the keyboard or is it elsewhere and soldered?

No the onboard ram is soldered on, usually under the ram slot.

So then, any CF-18, CF-29 or CF-73 that is listed as not turning on is dead?

I think when i got my CF-51 Pentium-M, it was listed as not booting.
I forget if they said that it turned on or not. They probably didn't specify.
I purchased it hoping adding RAM would work and it did.
I was hoping the same maybe true with the CF-18, CF-29 or CF-73.

I have got two CF-18's and one CF-73 that was "dead" off of ebay. When I got the 73 home I plugged it and it worked fine. The guy with the 73 was a small time seller that didn't jack all of his prices up so I contacted him to see how he tested it. It turns out he just had the wrong charger. I was kind enough to let him know that for future testing.

On both of the CF-18's Just removing the motherboard and then reseating everything they booted and work. It's just luck of the draw and guess work. Just ask yourself this question. Is there enough parts on it for that price to at least break even if it doesn't work.

The Alienware M11X R1 I just got was a parts / repairs unit. Booted and worked on external monitor fine. The company even didn't have the right video card listed. The hinge on one side was broke and that is a problem with these models. It turns out why the screen didn't work was half of the cable that goes into the screen was unplugged. I did a temporary repair of the hinge and for now it's good to go. Researching the hell out of that model helped me get it cheap and fixing it cheap. I got less than 350 in it.

I took a chance on a CF-52 here lately and that one didn't work out so well, but I can get all or most of my money back by selling parts if I need too. I still haven't given up yet on it.
