It came with caddy & cable no HDD. Already have (2) 40GB HDD from the 2 CF-29 caddy swaps. Have a external dvd so good to go on that as well since it says no optical MP.
No power supply still. To confirm the power supply that powered the CF-29 and CF-51 do not work for the CF-72 unit. Unless I am doing it completely wrong the battery charger CF-VCBTB1 does not fit the battery that came with the CF-72 but it did fit something else...
As I said before I didn't have an optical MP drive but something was in there.
*BAM* MP axillary battery! Even if it doesn't work that's a start. It lit up when plugged it up. If it doesn't work Can I swap the other on in the bottom of the unit into the caddy to charge or is the chip in the caddy gonna reject the swap?

*Edit*
After opening it I didn't find a wireless card or antennas for it. I guess that will be a project for later on. I also saw the heatsink and case had a few more spots for more heat piping; Was this for the PIII models or another option not needed?

Ok after looking here, *PLEASE DON'T BAN ME!* LOL!
Panasonic Toughbook CF-72 MAXIMUM P4 2.4 250HD DVD/CDRW - eBay (item 220668737645 end time Sep-19-10 21:25:16 PDT)
I noticed there is a 2.4 GHz P4 chip inside this "EXCELLENT refurbished machinery" and was wondering if there was a list of swaps for this comp. Also 1.5 GB ram even tho it says max I seen was 780.
The MP battery after 10 mins held good enough charge to power up and let me see bios. Screen works and is bright. Eventually I will find out if the touchscreen still works. From the looks of it they used everything they could find on this screen and no protector.
Still making a list of needs. -

Q: How much memory can my computer handle?
A: 768MB. -
My mk-5 cf-72 has a 1 gb add-on ram for a total of 1280mb
I have done the 2.6 Ghz pentium m upgrade
Read the excellent wikispaces info here

The MP battery is good but the main battery is dead to the world. Can I swap em out? It appears to only want to charge if the MP battery is in place. w/o it the thing won't power on. -
It should power on without a battery
Remember to hold the power switch on firmly for a second
Alex -
swapped the batts from the media bay to the main and it powers up. they must have shipped me a brick as the main and forgot about the media one.

My processor is
Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor - M 2.60 GHz, 512K Cache, 400 MHz FSB
Alex -
Not seeing any of those on the bay. Will keep an eye out. Till then I will deal with this. It turns on and everything I need to get around to the touchscreen to see if it even works. have my usb 2.0 card on the way. Now I need a power supply again.
Also will this work?

Yesterday my CF-72X*** came to me from Canada to Russia without any batt. and it's not easy to get one (main) in Russia, moreover - i could non find straight aswer - are them identical (may be it's because of my bad english)
So, if i'l get a media-bay battery - it will work in main-battery bay? -
Not sure on the battery caddies for the cf-72 but
The battery caddy for the cf-28,and cf-29's part number CF-VZSU1428 contain a CF-VZSU14B battery which is your main battery
You can disassemble the caddy and take the battery out
Alex -
Yeah, but CF-VZSU1428 is terribly expensive. Anyway, thanks for information! Now is much more easily to get right batt. So pitty - i got some 3450 li-ion elements 1850mAh (VS 1500mAh in original batts.)- if i'v got one dead battery, i could reassemble it thigh them. But... i to desided to sell CF-72 and get one of CF-T* - i have CF-18 and CF-50, so CF-T* will be better compromise between them
-
Ah sorry don't see my updated post. Never made it here I guess. The media bay battery had a release that was simple to figure out after 4 seconds of trying to release it. I don't have the 72 with me so I can't take pics. That's how I been charging both batteries via the bay using the $9.99 battery charger.
-
Well I wonder if these would even work.

Ouch....not cheap for sure
-
@ adamwest436
Looks like all those will work
The 2.6 is quite expensive, thats what I use in my cf-72
Consider 2.2 or possibly the 2.4 is as they could be less than $50
Alex -
Yeah didn't know that was a normal price considering I kinda paid $100 new for my 1st Core 2 Quad processor 6 months ago.
I ended up bidding on the 2.5 -
Won the 2.5 GHz all I need now is a power supply and a clue on how to load that "hoover dam" touchscreen driver. I guess I have to bid on another 72 parts only for the covers and palm rest. If lucky I might end up scoring 2 more batteries.
-
Batterys are an issue with these
They were low in capacity and because of the age of them , it's hard to find good ones
The extra power consumed with the larger processer won't help either
Alex -
I'm just gonna leave it plugged in like my IBM was. The 29 is good enough to be the true portable comp.
-
The speed switch XP program is working wonders and yeah ths thing is heating up. I didn't even know the fan came on before I installed this. If I ever get cold I can grab this and turn it on max performance.
From 9-16 to now all mods done were worth it. 1.8 cpu and 256 ram should be outlawed.
One more thing, where is the touchscreen driver(s)? Downloaded all and none are in here. -
Have that 2nd 72 on the way for parts. Will the heat pipes from that complete the last 2 spots or were those a rare heat pipe config? When the unit is open there is only 2 pipes there but the sink and spot near the HDD suggest there was at least a 3rd one possibly a 4th. -
Ok did it. the heat pipes if you are carefull can be reshaped to almost desired bents. The third heat pipe is now in place where it looked to almost be a factory spot near the power switch side of the unit.I also replaced the paste between the 2 piece copper heatsink and under the heatsink to the unit. I also placed it between the fan and heatsink. After all this wish I took notes on temps of the 2.5 CPU before and after.

Good to hear some about the "other" models.
There is precious little info around for them. I love my 29's but the semi-rugged line has some allure as well.
Just got the boy a CF-73 and have been searching for info on it, not easy to find.
Keep up the good work we need to build up the common knowledge on more models! -
The 72 is still different looking from the normal laptops and I found it somewhat easy to take apart. The site posted on page 1 that is only one page long (vs the 29 faq sections here) but still good enough. The 73 is still too new for regular people to experiment with. Our unit still has a few 73's left in service next to the dull counterparts. Only thing I hate about the 72 is the 1980's smokers package keyboard color. The donor has a newer looking keyboard but meh.
-
Yes the cf-72 is an easy model to work on
The white keyboards turn yellow usually , not a problem with Panasonics newer black type
Alex
My CF-72 is here.
