So I spilled coffee on my CF19 for the rist time at Starbucks. No sugar. Just a splash of espresso. I wiped what I could around and under keys with a paper napkin. Other than that should I worry at all? Bother to use distill water to try clean coffee under keys? Obviously I am typing this from CF19 :)

Rubbing alcohol or aerosol Electronic cleaner will work fine. I have cleaned many keyboards with either.
I doubt any coffee got inside the CF19.

There is nothing sensitive to coffee under keyboard :)
Just wash kb under normal water jet. I also use soap usually.

Rinse with water if you notice sticky keys. Rubbing alcohol will work as well but I like a stream of water. You can blow it out with compressed air if you like, just watch the pressure and direction.

I got one that was severely coffee-ed one time. Some coffee got under the keyboard but did not get by the gasket on the silver cover. (under the keyboard)

An inspection under the keyboard would be a good idea. Pull four keyboard bezel screws and roll the keyboard towards the palm rest. Go slow and allow the sticky tape to let loose.

Another thing I do if I sell to someone who I know is going to use it outdoors, roll the keyboard up, clean it and then 2 strips of packing tap over the cover, just in case. But yea, what Toughbook said, listen to experience.

I bet between him, me and Sheepman we have had literally hundreds of toughbooks of all different models. We know them inside and out. That goes for the rest of the regulars here also. :D

1- Educate yourself, you are a person like me, the simply evidence of non presence in a subforum tell nothing about real things works.
Dont be rude, you could be my father or I could be your father, but don't elevate you as a judge,
because in electronic world, cleaning by isopropanol alcohol is pretty a standard.

2- My first Toughbook was in 98 a CF28 model, a real POS but my father used it on building site.
It is Still alive somewhere I think, but performance on this (type of) notebook always been trash

This dont make you an illuminated, sorry.

So for resume things in right way.

"IF i spilled some liquid substances on my keyboard, how can I get rid of 'em without danger?"

    1-Distilled Water (bi-distilled or better)
    2-Isopropanol alcohol 97% or more

    then

3- Compress air to dry it(in case of distilled water)

These are the only secure way, because you can't know how many calcium (example in case of spilled water) or sticky substances(in case of spilled espresso with sugar) are hold down to keyboard and its button.

Cheers to all and good work

In addition to all those steps, I also agree with the Sheepmeister that lifting up the keyboard to remove any stickiness underneath is a good idea.

alcohol is fantastik for wipe down and adhesive/residue removal but not in poured liquid form; you need to contain it in a rag or similar. Since it has a low surface tension and cohesion, capillary action will draw it into tiny crevices and gaps in mating surfaces. IP ratings are for water and dust, NOT alcohol.
Will rinsing with OH work? Yes.
Can OH wick contaminants into places that water probably will not? Yes.

Use distilled water to rinse the keyboard and/or
Alcohol on a rag to wipe it off.

And keep in mind that the keyboard area itself is sealed off with the only opening underneath for the ribbon cables. And even that slit has a gasket around it. So go ahead, spill away! Likely the worst case is a new keyboard.

I didn't think about the capillary action! You are correct... It might draw stuff in to where you don't want rather than taking it out. Good catch.

I learned about how awesome %91 OH is (from you, IIRC) for cleaning during touch screen replacement. I was terrified that it would seep between the glass and resistive sheet.

Wife was having a fight with me. Well one sided as she was the one making noise. She knocked a full cup of coffee over onto my CF-19. Started freakign out about that as I calmly got up, walked over to the sink, and turned the water on. Laptop still running. Nothing fancy. Just TAP water. That was 3-4yrs ago. Keyboard still works fine.

Oh and her look of shock? PRICELESS. Derailed that "discussion" nicely!

I use a solvent that is no secret really*... 80% distilled water and 20% worth of 90% alcohol. To that I add a few drops of a nice liquid soap. I put that into a small spray bottle. It cleans Toughbooks better than anything else except for possibly Goo Gone for the sticky residue left by stickers or maybe MEK for paint and stubborn paint type markers.

Make sure all the doors to the ports are closed. Get the water at your sink luke warm, hold laptop upside down and spray the KB. You can take a small soft detailing brush and clean between the keys if needed. Rinse well and support unit upside down to allow it to dry. If you do it upside down you have a less chance of water intrusion. I don't really worry about it though. My units are exposed everyday to some dirty, greasy hands and stuff at my auto repair business. I have been cleaning mine for a long time in the sink, never an issue.
