I have a Panasonic Toughbook CF-50. I believe it might need a battery, but it won't turn on even when plugged in. It appears to have no life. I don't want to buy a battery without understanding whether it should boot while plugged in even with a dead battery. I am clueless.

It boots right up to the bios. No battery or hard drive using an IBM ac adapter.
CF 50 1.4ghz pentium M. You have another issue. Do the led's light?

Do you have a battery or do you just think your battery is dead?
Did you just get the laptop or has it been working and this problem just started?
What about the two led's on the front face beside the sound connectors?
Does your power adapter have an led and is it lit?

Yes, I agree with ohlip`s suggestion of checking the quality of the power adapter/"power brick." If you happen to have a simple inexpensive multimeter close at hand test the adapter`s power output. If no readings, then the adapter is faulty ( internal short/component burnt out/short on cable lead ), or the electrical socket that you are using may be at fault, so try another wall socket in the same room, or even a different room. If you don`t get better results, then that adapter needs to be changed.

If you happen to know someone close with the same model laptop, ask them permission to test the adapter. Have them try it on their machine, while you try theirs. If your "brick" works for them while their "brick" doesn`t power your laptop, them the problem lies in your CF-50.
If your "brick" doesn`t power their machine, while their "brick" powers yours, then you have just found the problem: a faulty power adapter.

You may also have an actual power switch problem, but try to determine if the "brick" works first before you go any further. Let us know your progress.

( Pets his handy Fluke Series II multimeter, still going strong all these years. )

My Toughbook has always been reliable until now. My guess would be that the power adapter socket on the laptop is fried( Cord end has always fit in sloppy/ loose). Is this an easily accomplished fix by a repairman? I myself am not tech savvy nor do I have the skill-set to make repairs. Also, are batteries readily available: Model No.CF-VZSU18B Li-ion 11.1V 6.6Ah Thanks again to all for the prior postings.

Some places do DC jack replacement, I would advise to google "laptop DC jack replacement yourtown".
Also make sure it's not the brick faulty, as DC jack replacement can be costly. (although relative to the price of a toughbook it is generally cheap)
