Alright guys, one of the projects we're working on is giving us a bit of a headache. It's a standalone video monitoring project. we are using archos 705 dvr's and frankly the firmware is crap. They stop recording for no reason randomly among other things. what we were brainstorming about was using laptops as an alternative recording device. However this opens up more possibilities now. What we were wondering is if it would be possible to create an ad-hoc network using directional wifi antennas to communicate with a "base station" that would allow us to monitor/control these remote stations without having to get near them. Just wondering if you guys had any other ideas about this sort of thing...

If u want it, like u had described it, u will need an meshnode network.
It would be cheaper, to use an normal WIFI-router at the basis station.
On the other hand, why would u use laptops on these cameras? I would use wifi network cameras or surveilance cameras with integrated recording on sd-card. -
Not sure what range you are working at, but I use these RF-modems to send data up to 20 miles. I know they will handle video as we use a pair to mirror our location computer display to a flat screen in the crane cab.

They are very durable and don't use much power, but do need some sort of protection from the weather. We use Pelican cases drilled for external antenna bulkhead mount connectors. I have had reliable data from a digital tide gauge streaming for over 20 miles.

Thanks both you guys! this is exactly what I was looking for, max range will be 15-20 miles as we'll be bouncing off of a few hills in the area. Nice find on the site capt. as they accept gsa purchases so it makes my life alooooooooot easier. It may be a year or two but this looks like exactly what we need.

Great, I forgot to mention that we power the remote tide gauge with a 12v Marine battery which is kept charged with a solar panel around 18 x 24". Good luck, let us know how it works out.
