I bought some cf-19 toughbooks to upgrade from our cf=18 here at work. I loaded 2 out of 6 so far with the OEM disk from heartland. The 4 I loaded, their hard drives indeed are loaded (they work fine in the 2 computers that loaded perfectly) but in these 4 certain computers a blue screen quickly pops up just after the xp logo that says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to your computer. If this is the first tie you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured ad terminated. Run chkdsk /f to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer. Technical information: ***stop:0xoooooo78 (oxf78aa524, oxc00000034, 0x00000000, 0x000000000)"

I loaded all these drives and checked them in the 2 good computers and they all work perfectly - but when installed in the 4 computers that dreaded scren comes up. Are the motherboards shot? All drives were wiped clean independantly, and loaded with Acronis.

Any help would be appreciated.

Set each unit to default setting on the bios and then try it again. If it does again, check the installed RAM. Its may run south. Install known good RAM and then test it again. If still happened. Pull out the wi-fi card and WWAN card if there is.

I wonder if the 4 bad 19's might have a newer BIOS for Vista/Win7. Suggest checking them all (F2 when booting) and compare carefully.

Good catch. I had not thought about that.

What is the difference between a XP bios and a Vista/Win7 bios?

There is only a difference on the Mk1 for the CF-19/30. If you have a xp bios and load windows vista or 7 it will work and run, but some stuff won't work like touchscreen. Same if you have vista bios and xp loaded on the machine.

My understanding is that identically-specified machines can use the same image - but that even quite small differences can prevent an imaged drive from running in a different machine.
I've seen that screen or one very like it - and it was after cloning with Acronis. I have two CF-29's that are almost identical but not quite.
Loaded XP SP3 in the slightly higher spec. machine (GPS, EVDO &?) and installed drivers until there were no unknowns. The drive worked perfectly in both machines.
Then cloned it with Acronis and the clone bluescreened in the other machine just like yours did.(edit: similarly at least) I thought of removing GPS/EVDO etc. stuff one thing at a time from the clone & trying again but it seemed less hassle just to do it the long way.
    Good luck!

Er ... did you remember to reset the boot order to boot from HD afterwards? Oh, OK. Just me then...

Sometimes an Acronis image can be VERY finicky. Been there done that. Try a full install on the suspect machines using Windows install disks.
