I am new to this forum, any assistance would be most appreciated.

    I acquired a TB-29 MK-5(CF-29N3B26BM), it has a 1.6 Centrino, 768mb ram, but no-touchscreen. Runs perfect with Win XP

I just won a TB-29 MK-4(CF-29LTQGZBM) on ebay, it has a 1.6 Centrino, 512 mb, with a touchscreen. Has Win7 loaded (I know 512mb with Win7 not a good choice). This one was just purchased for parts initially.(Touchscreen, Cd caddy, etc)

I do not know the difference between the CF-29 mk4 and mk5. Would it be worth taking the touch screen off the mk4 and putting it on the mk5 or should I just use the mk5 computer for parts?

What is the max ram limitations for these motherboards? If I remember correctly one ram slot is on the bottom but the 2nd one is under the keyboard (URRRR)

I have purchased a 1gig stick of ram, and a pata to sata hard drive adapter and I plan on installing a Sata II SSD hard drive when I can afford it. Also looking for a relatively inexpensive emissive backlit keyboard (I know right). I am trying to build a Ultimate 29 if you know what i mean.

I am not new to the TB world, at my last company they let me build a TB-19 from ground up and I ended up getting one ordered with every bell and whistle available, hey it was on the companies dime why not? Basically a employee retention deal!!! Liked the tablet functionally but kick myself in the backside for not getting a fully loaded TB-30, it was my choice.

TOUGHBOOKS ROCK, lucky enough and honored to have one again. This time its MINE and I don't have to give it back when I change employers. (WooHoo)

Thanks in advanced for any/all assistance

CF 29's have only 1 ram slot. Touchscreen should be a simple bolt on swap. Just change the entire lid. The 1 gig stick is probably all the memory you can add.

Only one RAM expansion slot on the CF-29 Series; the one on the bottom.

And as to additional memory, the 512MB base RAM Mk4 and Mk5 can handle a 1GB 200-pin SODIMM RAM module, while it has been established that the 256MB base RAM Mk4s and Mk5s can handle certain 2GB modules.

Myself I would put the touchscreen in the MK5 with the 256 memory . That way you can upgrade the memory with a 2 GB stick and I would load W7 on it too. My guess you did not get the W7 CD or a COA sticker with it when you bought it ?

ddr2 ram by the way. Keep both 1.6 units and buy a top half touch screen for the 29N off of a Mark1. Then you can feel sorry for IT, fix it up and buy another touchscreen unit....then you'll have four ad infinitum.
    Welcome to the insane asylum.

    Great point!

    As Gork wrote; Mk1's, 2's and 3's take DDR(1) RAM, while the Mk4's and 5's take DDR2.

There is no performance difference between the mk4 and mk5
The others have mentioned that it's possible to upgrade the ram in the non-touchsceen model with a 2 gb ddr2 stick , and for W7 this is recomended

What TC said ....and others.....look at Azrial's signature for Readyboost info. Go slow. I like the 1.6 units. Fix 'em both, run the 512 on XP and play with Win7 on the 256. Am I repeating myself

As far as ram for the 512 and XP all you really need is another 512. See Tomcat's several posts on that. What is it TC.....512+256 ....is all XP uses?

Then hammer down and put a 2Gb stick in the 256.

If you're not scared to split the top half......I would add TS components and a brand new TS element from techtuff. I'm on one now and it is bright and clear.

    2 cents more.

Oops, I just bought a 256 unit when I wasn't looking. I will turn it into a TS and post a report. Couple weeks.

Thanks for all the info everone.

I put a 1gb stick in the bottom panel of the the MK5 and it registered 1.2gb through XP. I am not sure if there is another slot under the keyboard of not, if so I will test it out with the 512 i replaced with the 1gig stick last night. From what I have researched and please let me not if the findings are incorrect the mobo will only support 1.2gbs of ram, please advise.

I have no intentions at at this time to load Win7. The Tbook 29 wither it be the MK4 or MK5 will be used for work out in the field. All my work apps are not compatible win7 so I will continue using the tried and true XP. I would like the abilty to go to Win7 once all my wk apps are compatible with it though.

Unfortunately, I will only have the opportunity to keep one, the mk4 or mk5, so that's why I wanted to get everone's expert opinion on if its worth the time to swap the TScreen from the MK4 to the MK5.

I appoligize for all the questions guys, I researched on-line all I could prior to joining this awesome forum. I wish I was as tech savy as all you are but I am not.(trust me i am still trying to decifer/decode all the tech info you guys have already replied with LOL, its great) It is really nice to see there are guys/gals out there that love Tbooks just as much if not more than I do.

    Thanks again everyone

The only difference I have seen so far between the Mk4 and MK5 is that the Mk5 has TPM 1.2 and the MK4 does not.

From what I'm reading from you gentlemen is that I may be able to put a 2 gig stick in the MK5? If so, would someone be able able to point me in the right direction in order to B/S/T for one?

I am not sure what you guys are referring to when you say the 256 unit or the 512 unit though, once again I am sorry that I'm light speed behind you guys at this bit I'm eager to get to your level one day.

To Toughasnails... no Win7 info(COA, etc...) was recieved but when everything is ironed out with my work apps I've got Win 7 stuff covered.

The base ram, either 256mb or 512mb, is permanently affixed to the motherboard. The 256mb models can be maxed out with 2gb memory. The 512mb model can only be maxed out with 1gb memory for a total of 1.5gb. This applies to both the Mk4 and Mk5. If you are running XP the 1GB stick add-on will work great

My wife's HP DV6000 laptop runs Win7 great with 1.5 GB RAM; she LOVES it. I DID do an internal USB Flash Drive hack to get her a 4GB ReadyBoost; but other than that it's stone stock.

If you've got an SD card slot in your beast, it might be worth looking into.
