I can buy a CF-M34 celeron 400Mhz machine from a german company for 65 euros.
The company just sells them cheap, but arent that toughbook-experts like this forum has. (so, they dont know all the details of the CF-M34 they sell...).
Anyhow, its a Celeron 400Mhz , 10 gig hd, and 128 MB ram machine.
I am googling for some days to find out if this version of the CF-M34:
- has this Celeron 400Mhz the SSE instructionset that the Celeron 300Mhz version lacks ?
- what kind of videocard is inside ? The same as the Pentium III 400Mhz version ? or the same as the Celeron 300Mhz videocard ?
As there are many users who have a CF-M34 laptop on this forum, i hope that somebody can give me this information.
Thanks in advance.

CF-M34, P3-400 with Mini-PCI 56k winmodem, internal Sierra SB300 CDPD modem. No ethernet.
Update: Another configuration of the CF-M34 (the "mk2" "J") comes with a Silicon Motion LynxEM based video card, Crystal audio and Aztech 56k data/fax Mini-PCI modem and no CDPD modem or ethernet. (It may also support a USB floppy!)

), what is the unit's complete Model Number?
This is important to be able to provide accurate information.
For example:
The CF-M34J Mk 2 (w/Intel® Pentium III 400 MHz CPU) has a Silicon Motion (Smimini or Lynx) video chip.
As to the characteristics of Intel's processors, best to go to a knowledgable source: Intel®Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Thanks for the fast response. I dont have any model number. Here is the e-bay add, for this laptop :
Panasonic CF-M34 400 128MB 10GB Touchscreen COM USB w2k | eBay
and i found another e-bay add , with a picture of the diagnose screen:
Toughbook Panasonic CF-M34 C400 Touchscreen 40 GB WLAN | eBay
according to the above pictures , this Celeron 400Mhz CF-M34 has a Silicon Motion LynxEM (4MB). Dont know if this is accurate.
IF so, is the LynxEM a 3D graphic chip , or just 2D graphic chip. -

Hi after waiting about 3 weeks for my ordered 2 CF-M34s Celeron 400Mhz arrived, i finnaly got them.
Funny thing is, the shop accidentality send me 1 CF-M34 Mk3 700Mhz machine with a 40 gig harddrive and wireless antenna instead of the Celeron 400Mhz with 10 gig and no wireless antenna. So, thats nice.
Now i have 4 CF-M34s
2 x Mk1 Celeron 300Mhz
1 x Mk2 Celeron 400Mhz with a 4MB LynxEM+ videochip
1 x MK3 Pentium III-M (Tualatin) with SSE , 4MB LynxEM+ videochip.
Are some / all parts of these 3 CF-M34 versions interchangable, because the outer hulls of my 2 new M34s are a bit used/scratched etc. and I have one spare CF-M34 mk1.
And another NEW problem i face is that the 2 M34s with the LynxEM+ videochip, have an utility to rotate the screen. But i cant get it to work on Windows XP sp1. I tried several drivers, but i only get a black screen with some white garbage dots on it.
Anybody knows about a Working screen-rotater for Windows XP sp1 ? -
There has been a flood of the 700 mhz machines with the RIM antenna I have seen here lately on ebay.
I think all the main body parts are basically the same. -

I now have another problem with the MK3 700Mhz machine: The sound aint working right. I tried all drivers, but none gave sound. In bios when I press F2, the speaker bleeps. So, the speaker works. In Windows 98SE (i tried that one aswell, the sound also works), so its a driver problemmo, any hints of working drivers ?
I found out that the BIOS setting was that the BIOS handled the interupts/ports for the serial/parallel/touchscreen etc. I changed it to let the OS (win XP) handle it. I had sound for about 30 minutes. I rebooted the lappy, but then again : NO sound.
Oh, and i want to share some information aswell, instead of only asking for info as a leech.
I found this nice website with information about making your own USB-bootable M34.
CF-M34 USB boot by Leslie Wright
Mod your CF-M34 to boot from a USB Flash Drive -
I have seen that site and tried to get mine to boot off of usb but it wouldn't work unless I booted it first with PLOP.
I have two of the 700 mhz machines and one has 2000 on it when I got it, the other has nothing on it right now. You have to use some generic xp driver for that hardware to get it to work. I am sure I will be getting into that problem soon when I start messing with mine again. -

Concerning the USB boot , I used the info from that website, and was able to install Windows XP with a USB drive. I used this little program : Installing Windows XP from a USB key | Kioskea.net
The little trick for the Mk3 and later versions is to unplug your harddrive, then insert a USB-stick. The laptop then can boot from the USB stick.
If you then power down the laptop and reconnect your harddrive, the CF-M34 still boots from the USB stick. This kinda worked for me.
Try the above software Ador, and i bet, that you will like it.
I used to have only 1 huge partition for Windows XP, by using the Windows 98SE install and then Windows XP way.
Now, thanks to this USB trick and the software i mentioned above, i now can install Windows XP whenever i want. Also nice, is that when i make a windows XP harddrive with several partitions etc , i can also use it on my CF-M34 Mk2 400Mhz celeron machine without any problems.
Only one problem still exists with my 700MHz Mk3 machine. The Rotate screen doesnt seem to work with Windows XP sp1. Only a black screen, when i use Alt+CTRL+R.
The sound problem was easy fixed with installing Win XP by USB, and then just installing the official drivers. I only find the 700Mhz machine a bit slow working at games. Am i missing some SSE drivers or so ? Some games play almost at the same speed as my 300Mhz machine....
Need some info about a CF-M34 celeron 400Mhz machine
