I've never seen them with the built-in antenna, but I have seen GPS modules like that for SD slots.

Kinda cool, but not sure if we could use it.

looks kool, but wouldn't work on a cf-28 with the cover closed... when i had my 29 i used to have bluetooth with an entenna that i never extended in the pcmcia port and i used to use a logitech bluetooth mouse with it so it appeared that i had internal bluetooth even though i was a internal bluetooth wannabe lol... thats why i got the cf-30... everything integrated!!! thats my goal :D (except damn fingerprint reader and GPS (not that i need GPS or anything lol))

JB, on a side note, where does the fingerprint reader go on the CF-30?? I have the CF-30 loaded, EXCEPT the fingerprint reader and smart card reader...I might look into adding fingerprint, just making sure I have room..

    Thanks

Hey guys... A few quick questions for those that have had the CF-29. There are several on ebay now for cheap. Anyway... Does the CF-29 have the internal PCMCIA slot like the CF-28? Also... Is there a spot in there for the daughterboard that we are using on the CF-28 to enable the GPS? I'm thinking about buying a CF-29 but want to see/hear the similarities first.

The price? It hurts thinking about forking over that much loot for a 30.

It hurts thinking about the fact that we DO fork over that much loot for 30s.. In taxes! I guess WE can't really complain about that though, because if it weren't for government agencies buying these toughbooks when they're new, there wouldn't be any off-lease specials for us to buy!

Good point. I was asking my old man about what they do with police laptops when they retire them (He was with the local PD until he retired in 2003), and he joked "With how they spend money, they probably throw them in the dumpster".

Looks like I'm going dumpster diving.

Well nuts. I shoulda asked my brother to dig when he was in the army.

I'm really curious though where some of these sellers on eBay score their toughbooks at.

I have to say thank you to everyone who posted pics....I can get the retro fit kit for 150 to 200 dollars, and curious if I want to do it or not.. I a really second guessig, if the cover is as cheap as the power connector cover...I will be replacing them left and right...If is a thought though...I use this laptop for some of my police work, so added security with the fingerprint reader would be nice....

Thanks again guys for the pics...

As big a fan I am of dumpster diving, I'm not sure I would want to try it in the one behind the cop shop. Or for that matter, one one a military facility :)

I didn't think police departments could throw retired assets out. I thought they were required to auction them.

I think most gov. agencies sell through surplus property. There are federal auction sites online, classified ads in the paper (may be the only uses for newspaper ads anymore). Try state/local Dept. of General Services for surplus sales - usually monthly auctions or onsite sales.

Usually (at least here) they will strip out memory, and remove and destroy hard drives for security. Local police IT will drill through the drive rather than take the time or risk to try to delete the info on it.

I'll have to keep looking then. I might have better luck out west though.. I've had no luck finding where the local city, and county police sell theirs.

See i never had that money up front to pay for the initial cf-29 that i paid close to $4000 for when i was still a junior in highschool lol. i had bought about $4000 worth of laptops over the last 3 years prior and i bought them extremly low, and sold them as USED 3 years later for more than i paid for them in the first place :D. at one point i seriously had like 7 or 8 decent higher end laptops and about 1-2 lower end ones... i sold em all on ebay for all that money and stashed it into a cf-29. then i used my cf-29 for about 4 years and then sold it for more than i paid for it yet again and bought my cf-30 :D. i will do the same thing when the new toughbook comes out and make money outta the deal :D... in the process i've bought a cf-m34 and will prolly keep it for a few years and sell it for more than i paid/put into it and i have a CF-T5 that i've had listed on ebay for about 2 months now and it isn't selling :(... Long story short, if you have money in the bank, i've learned to invest all of it as long as you make money outta the deal, and thats what i'be been doing in the computer industry for the last 6 years.
