I'm due for a new laptop at work and, of course, I've requested a Toughbook. Since we usually have Dell's and Apple's I need to "justify" why I should get this instead of the standard issue. Any good points about security features and such from those that actually use them would be a good plus.

3 Year warrenty, 10 hour battery life.

Equip an IBM Think Pad or DELL equally and I think you will find that the Panasonic is not much more expensive, I believe you can get a CF53 for around a grand (i3).

The argument: the laptop will not incur any additional costs over the next 3 years, a dell will break if you drop it, an IBM might fair better but they aren't rated for drops either.

I have a tough-book that I dropped down the stairs (carpet), it was in my backpack as I slipped on iced over concrete stairs (probably saved my spine), I slammed it into a metal fire door and left a huge dent (in the door), I spilled a 1 liter cup of water on it.... and if you were to see my laptop you wouldn't believe its history, it hardly shows any signs of abuse.

Annual failure rate is 2.8% instead of 27%

It has TPM 1.2 for security, ruggedness, dock available, dedicated card if needed, fingerprint scanner if needed, touchscreen optional, good batery life, carry handle, light up keyboard optional, I am sure there are others I have missed.

I would read this thread as to why Toughbooks are better: http://forum.notebookreview.com/pan...e-thread-against-anything-isnt-toughbook.html

    In particular:

People that don't want to deal with a cracked screen
Deal with a ripped out power socket
Deal with fried CPU's and overheating
Deal with being scared to touch the damn thing without breaking it
Deal with throwing on the conveyor belt at the airport for them to scan it
Deal with stuffing your laptop into a bag every time you need to get in and out of a taxi cab
Deal with having to plug in a USB light to see the keyboard at night
Deal with having to plug the laptop in after a measly 8 hours
Deal with messing around with a Sprint/Verizon/ATT card sticking out of the side
Deal with a glare from the sunlight shining through the window on the screen
Deal with protecting it with your life if it rains a little bit
Deal with kids banging on it
Deal with having to carry around a huge cumbersome bag EVERYWHERE YOU GO

Thanks all. I'll let you know if I get it. I've only owned used toughbooks before for personal use but if they let me get this one I hope that others in our company will follow suit and it will be another standard choice.

Where is your company getting them from?

I have a HUGE stock pile of CF-53's... I can beat ANY price out there too...

They are getting them from a local vendor. It's already ordered, a CF-53AAGZX1M for about $1400.
