Hi everyone. I just purchased my first toughbook this week and im loving this beast so far. I added 1gig of ram and im waiting on a sata-ide adapter to install the new wd black 320g HD. Im also going to order a dvd burner for it tonight.

Couple of questions. What is the antenna on the screen for? Wifi? Also, how do I know if it has factory gps?

    Thanks!
    Steve

I'm planning on buying another of them to use as my "learning" mule on `taking apart/putting together' techniques, rather than one of my good CF-29s. ;)

Thanks for all the info. Is there any reason why you guys are using these as mules? The one I picked up is in decent shape. Just need to removed this SBC logo somehow.

sdriver...welcome to the board. I've got the same ex-SBC model and I think it's a great machine for the money. I also added 1 gb of ram and a bigger HD. I stayed with an IDE drive. I just got my Sony DVD burner from Geeks that I have not yet installed. I'm not sure if I will add internal GPS or not. It would be nice but the small, puck type external GPS units go for around $40 and work pretty well. Make sure to check out the CF-29 specific threads...there's some great info in there.

As is my CF-29HTM50BM (now: CF-29HAM50BM, having substituted an Emissive Backlit Keyboard in mine :)).

I'm getting a second SBC to use as the `mule', as the prices are coming down on the `less than good' units.
    Why? ;)

Anyway; my CF-29NDLGFBM Mk5 came "Logoless", so I got one of the original TOUGHBOOK logo stickers from Rob ( JB007Rules) and installed it, so check with him to see if he has any more.

Ive been looking for a backlit keyboard for mine on ebay. Thats going to be my next upgrade.

I peeled that SBC logo off. Didnt realize it was a glued on decal at first. I just didnt like it there, thats all.

You can also go to your local sign shop and give them a logo and have them print one up... I do this for special customers where they order 2+ laptops.... A very custom touch for not a whole lot of money...

No need to go ebaY™ ;) ; just check the ToughBook Buy Sell and Trade Forum, where you will find: Okay, here we go! I got lots of CF-29/30 Emissive keyboards!.
I, too, started to replace my SBC decal; that's the reason I had purchased the TOUGHBOOK label I had.

Instead, I decided the SBC logo was kinda neat, leaving the Pany logo free to fill the void on my Mk5 when it came in. :)

I got the sata hdd installed last night using a sata-ide apater without a hitch. Was a bit tight in the cage but it went.
I installed the OS on the new drive. Im having some trouble getting the touchscreen and FN keys working. Ive downloaded the drivers and still no go. Is there something im missing?

    Thanks

See if this helps: CF-29[H/J]T(mk3), CF-29[H/J]TxxxBx Install Instructions.

You'll need Abobe Acrobat Reader to use this.

Thanks again TopCop. That lead me in the right direction. I had to manually browse to the driver location for windows to install the proper one.

Well... good thing; you prolly don't get that much overrun by the freaks from Reno, but on the other hand, when the big one hits you'll still be wishing for a REALLY BIG FREAKIN' BOAT... and that tooled leather will STILL be bad@ss.

I've been to Reno. They have more freaks per capita than San Antonio has per capitas... makes the "Keep Austin weird" contingent look like pikers. :twitchy: Kindof like Wac(k)o TX, only they actually have winter. :elvis:

This of course does not mean there's anything wrong with YOU... necessarily.

Can you expand on this a little. What issues?
I find the TP a little clumbersome and am not sure if there is a cure. I did check a box in the mouse control area that highlighted the area the window the mouse(TP) was hovering over. That helped some.
Sorry 'bout high-jacking your thread.

No worries Jeff. My TP scrolls everywhere except Firefox. Ive googled the issue and it seems TP scrolling in FF is a known issue. Just wondering if anyone found a better driver for it. Suppose I could settle with a different browser.

Im also not a big fan of touchpads. Using a mouse really isnt an option in my truck, where I use my toughbook most of the time. Ive been thinking of getting a trackball and sticking it somewhere with some velcro.

When navigating in a vehicle with one of my Toughbooks, I use a MOGO bluetooth mouse. Travels/charges in the PCMCIA, fits in pocket when in use, its about the size of a credit card, and works fine using my thigh as a mouse pad. There is a scroll function available but I don't use it.

I have a touchscreen, but still find my mogo mouse to be quite convenient.

Also, click the left and right buttons on your tp at the same time to get scroll lock. that's as good as it gets for a 29 and FF...
