I suggest to stay away from inkjet printers, you will waste all your money in ink.
I use something like this
Newegg.com - brother HL Series HL-5370DW Workgroup Up to 32 ppm Monochrome Wireless Laser Printer
except without the wireless and without the duplex.
You won't beat the ink per dollar ratio in this category. I am very happy with mine and got it super cheap, the starter cartridge on my has already lasted over 3000 pages (I have lost count). -
I do a bit of color printing. I agree with the no ink suggestion. So what? A separate printer for images?
Thanks. -
I use a HP color laser hard wired to the router to allow all my computers to access it
Using cheap toner refill kits the cost is not too high and the images do not fade as some inkjets do
The printer is huge though, but after using 2 small inkjets in the past with paper jams and high cost/page I live with it -
Jeff,
I'm using a Brother MFC-295CN connected via UTP cable directly to router and serves as my scanner, copier and fax. It's an inkjet and as with ALL inkjets, their print heads will clog from infrequent use. I've considered their laser networkable models but with the Mrs and 3 kids going at it, their projects and whatnots... nah... Instead I opted for a set of 3rd party cartridges/ink refills and that saved me lots!!
1. Cheap.
Should be competitively priced since it's not the newest model.
2. Easy set-up for home network.
Very easy. The CD will guide a novice through it. Onboard menu isn't too difficult to understand either.
3. Plays easily with Netgear Router/Wireless.
Tried the Brother with D-Link, TP-Link & Engenious routers. No issues and works as it should. Scanner function will correctly route scanned images to any PC/laptop that's connected to the router (UTP or Wifi).
4. Small footprint.
It's much smaller and lighter than my late hernia-inducing Tektronix Phaser 350.
5. Reasonably good print quality ink-jet.
Quality is decent with 3rd party inks but as Alex mentioned, sometimes these prints will fade.
Good shopping,

Yeah, yeah I saw that.
Additional requirement:
6. I don't have to drive to Atlanta to find one. -

I have a Kodak 5250 wireless, very easy to set up and cheap ink prices . Under $10.00 for black and under $15.00 for color

Brother hardware is sketchy (so far my MFC-5890CN is 100%, a first for a Brother here) but the software is stable and friendly. HP hardware is ok but the software is written in hell by particularly devious imps. Choose your poison. I got my dad a lexmark wifi printer and so far it has been a winner. Don't have enough experience with the brand to offer more than that.
