Nice, but first we need an schematic diagram of the unit and its pin out. I think "d p yan started already on that with his cf-18. I am interested on that too. Unfortunately it is available only in US of A.

Teo,
You know that on this forum a little thing like international borders is only a slight bump in the road. If you look around on that site they have lots of stuff for developers and OEM users, so I don't think the pinouts would be a problem.

For those interested the GM862-GPS is made by telit ( www.telit.com). They sell a number of neat modules - the 862 page is http://www.telit.com/en/products/gsm-gprs.php?p_id=12&p_ac=show&p=7
In europe you can get them retail from roundsolutions.com, in uk we got ours from http://www.sequoia.co.uk and of course sparkfun in the US
The hardware guide is excellent - the software guide is usable but could be better.
The module is fairly picky about voltages but nothing too difficult. it is rs232 but an ftdi usb to rs232 ic will sort that out.
Sparkfun have quite a nice development board - if a little expensive - and you can get their eagle pcb library with the GM862 device included for free. Also have a look at the GPS forum on sparkfun as a number of people are using the GM862 for various projects.
We are currently developing a board to bolt into the cf-18 & 19 to replace the sound card and wireless modem but we will also be building a board for the CF-28 as the connectors are the same - the pinouts are different but the 50 way hirose connector is the same on both. we'll also be using separate gps and gprs stub antennas.
it looks like a really nice unit - inbuilt python interpreter, camera interface, sirf starIII, gprs class 10 etc. -
d p,
Well then, it sounds like you guys will be taking all the fun out of it for the rest of us. Will the CF-28 board live where the RIM modem used to live, and any idea how much it will cost?

captain,
Yer, the idea is that it would replace the rim daughterboard as a bolt in option and simply plug into the CN18 connector as per the rim board and have the same mounting holes.
I don't think we will be selling it as a product - it will just be used as part of our infrastructure.
I was hoping we'd just post the design and related build info on this forum so everyone could benefit and improve on it. It's not like it's bleeding edge stuff really just piecing together technology.
The boss is fairly open to the idea as we got the cf-18 schematic from this forum. His thinking is that we'd post the v1.x designs here and then probably keep the v2+ designs internal as we would then have invested some time and effort in our software to use it at that point.
We are also working on a sata hdd replacement for the cf-28 using a ide to sata converter and a custom cable to plug into the cf-28's current hdd port - that we may sell when it's ready. We're having lots of fun finding decent ide hdd's like everyone else here - sata seem like the way to go for us - if we can get it working.... -
Hey guys... while I was poking around their site in regards this stuff, I stumbled across this family of Ceramic Patch/LNAmplified GPS antennas, which seems almost custom made for our internal installs on the TBs:

Has anyone tried the amplified models in stock locations with the 408 GPS? Or have you guys already done these and I was just to daft to notice?

Anyone....Anyone....Anyone.....

Nope... I feel certain that nobody has done this yet... Feel up for a challenge?

Typing on it right now actually!! I knew that I would love this little thing! I paid a little more for it than I could have gotten one for, but it was loaded from panny with everything but GPS (First internal upgrade!!) So, that's why this thread caught my eye.
As you might have seen from another post I am considering several modifications to the 18 & 29 for HAM radio as well as for plain GPS. SO, if anyone has any input that they would like to add about this, just respond here, I'm keeping an eye out on these threads regularly!!!
Hope to hear from all of you!
