    Newbie Introduction / Issues

    System Generic build (old parts) trying to build a carputer...
    Hoping to run XP Pro
    Recently purchased a CF-VDL01 - and I'm sure you can guess that's where the problems start :)

    Found your wonderful site and have been diligently reading through closed threads and read the FAQs and links therein.
    This one in particular:

    Currently the monitor is set up as my only screen (since that is how it will be in the car).
    I've installed both versions of drivers on the post (mentioned above).
    In Device Manager I see 4 Default Monitors listed.
    Currently trying with a Serial cable (borrowed from work - :rolleyes: ) with an extension Cable (also borrowed...) and I'm hoping both of them are straight-through cables.
    The second set of drivers is newer than the first and after uninstalling the first it did a detection test and rebooted.
    I now have UPDD under "Mice and other Pointing devices"

    Adjust settings > Status tab - Init state Timed Out Pool usage, Now/HWM 21kb/49kb... (if that says anything to anyone)

    oh a bit more about me - I am a computer guy but... the only serial experience i have is connecting to routers etc... not mice or touchscreens.

    30 minutes later
    uninstalled UPDD (will reinstall after i get a decent serial cable)
    found out that one of them is an APC uplink cable ... no clue what the pinout on that is... so took that one off
    Tried it with the other one that looks like a plain serial cable and still no joy.

    Ok one last try with the UPDD software and the regular cable... then i officially am out of trouble shooting steps (other than reloading OS - which i'd rather not do)
    ---------------------------
    Reseted and rebooted
    reinstalled UPDD (fyi version for vdl02 though i have vdl01 - if that matters)
    detection ..................... unable to detect
    Reboot
    Device still in timeout status ... (see above)

    OK i give - any suggestions (ps tomorrow i'm going to get a serial cable from the store)

    Make sure you are using a Serial cable and not a Null Modem cable.

    yah i just thinking - in my last job i had the supplies and would have made my own cable ... now i have to trust store bought ones... lol

    i'm going to go to the store tomorrow and see if i can get one.

    I'll post how that goes...

    Look at Monoprice.com -- All kinds of serial cables in various lengths, well made and cheap too.

    ugh - got home tested the cable i just bought and it's a null modem (doesn't say that on the bloody box does it...) so it's going back

    sigh but to have a radio shack or something like that in germany... (or to be able to get something from an american online store quickly...)
    so i'm ordering one from the uk

    i hope the pinout is straight through...
    anyone have an idea what the pinout actually is?
    1-1 2-2 3-3 4-4 5-5 6-6 7-7 8-8 9-9 ??

    the one i just got was 1-4-6 2-3 3-2 4-1-6 5-5 7-8 8-7 9-9 (null modem)

    oh ... another thing... does anyone know if the Function buttons on the screen will work if i use a ps2 cable directly from screen to keyboard port?
    Pinout on that would be great as well if anyone has it...

    Did you check Panasonic's simple hookup schematic from my Serial cable link?

    The port on the bottom of the diisplay is not " PS/2"; but a dedicated Function Key Port.

    ps: Check your e-mail for the Display Operating Manual. :)

    nevermind on the function keys then ... oh well

    from your link - i'm not getting much out of that
    what i'm seeing is a two page almost brochure looking thing for the whole setup and all i see it saying is that it needs a serial cable (serial cable is a generic term that can refer to about 6 different versions of cable...sigh)
    please let me know if i got that wrong or am missing something (am known to...)

    hmmmm... manual is kind of short.
    sadly it does not say what kind of serial cable either
    but it did say two devices needed to be set up in UPDD (nm that is for the m34 - i'm guessing it has a touchscreen on it as well.)

    did you guy's use a setup like this in SP Cars?

    Panasonic UPDD Driver (Release Date: Aug 30, 2005):
    cfvdl02_xp2k_d020849.exe (3.1 mb)

    Panasonic TPDD Driver (Release Date: May 25, 2010):
    cfvd02_xp_u1_d100858.exe (2.4 mb)

    Where I was stationed (NAS-FW-JRB), DOD Police provided the vehicles for the joint (DODP, Navy, Air Force, Army) Base Security Forces, and I don't remember them having any on-board PCs.

    My duty was ABGD, Flightline and Customer Service (desk duty), and spent the last two years on the Base Honor Guard instead of SF duty.

    The few USAFSP vehicles we had (pickup trucks ;)) did not have computers on board; that I know for sure (at least at that time).

    I'm nearly certain that the serial cable is used for the touch screen function only! The functioning of the monitor, as far as image is concerned, is handled via the VGA cable so if you have a problem seeing a proper image look there first. Test your setup on any known working stand alone monitor. If that is working then move just the video cable to the VDL01. You might have to play with resolution settings et al. Report back,

    From the Troubleshooting section of the Panasonic LCD Monitor CF-VDL02 Operating Instructions:

    Problem:

    Unable to input by touching the display

    Corrective actions:

    ● Check the cable connection to the LCD monitor.
    ● Confirm the serial port has not been set to [Disable] in the Setup Utility.
    ● Confirm that the setting for resource in [UPDD]* → [Settings] → [Hardware] and the setting of the Serial Port in the Setup Utility are the same.

    * (Windows XP): [Start] → [All Programs] → [UPDD]

    Yah i figured as much - the SF /MPs here (Germany) don't have anything in their cars either (other than radios)... but i thought it'd be worth an ask... :)

    @ CAPT.DOGFISH
    The Video works great - had a 15 in monitor (800x600) hooked up before the vdl arrived and then i switched to that seamlessly!
    The touch screen part is the issue :(
    for some reason the only things being sold around here (and that i could find at work) are null modem cables.
    I have a straight through on order from amazon uk so it will hopefully get here by the weekend.

    I'll have a look at the "Brief" in the next couple of days and i'll give them drivers a try if the ones i have on now don't work when the cable arrives...

    the ONLY thing I'm hoping is that it is not some proprietary pin-out that panasonic has going on with this thing. Then there may be some problems and i'll have to see if someone has an OEM cable that they can do a pin-out with... (I hope it does not come to that)

    I'll keep updating once there is something to update.

    No worries, the serial cable is not Panasonic specific, I have several which I use interchangeably.
    The UPDD is pretty generic, I suspect you'll have no issues if you stay away from W7, might even work with that.

    you wouldn't happen to know if the serial cable is just a straight through extension cable? (i hope so cause that's what i ordered...)

    nah - in the house i have two lil speakers just to hear it but it's going into the car to be plugged into the aux jack... so i shouldn't need audio on the monitor...

    oh and i will be sure to post pics when done... :)

    actually that may not be such a bad idea... then i'll be able to listen to the news with my music in the background... :)
    trying it out now...

    cool - that works as well...
