Found your forum recently, been lurking and reading. Interested in a CF-19, with duo core and a few other options. I am a merchant marine and work on the water. Need something small, to keep in touch with the office, email and ebook programs and maybe watch a movie. Looking to spend about $300, is this possible?
    Thanks

I may be able to help you out...
Can you send me a PM or conversation as I guess it's called in the new software?

Every sailor I know just gets a big laptop, because they really don't need rugged one and it's much cooler to watch movies on 15-17" screen :)

If you are wanting a dual core and a toughbook here are your options. (The 29 is the older single core model)

CF-30 it's the replacement for the 29 model. 13.3 inch screen all three have a 1.6 ghz dual core, ddr2 ram and the video card power goes up on each of there three marks.

CF-19 dual core, ddr2 ram, 10.1 inch screen, smaller and lighter, still fully rugged though.

If you want a newer look and a wide screen you want a CF-52 or 53. They are Semi rugged, you can even get them with a ATI video card for some gaming if you want. Have a carry handle built in.

Don't worry OP, mariner here myself.

I travel with a CF-30 mk2 and use Mint w/MATE desktop for an OS. I'm not as familiar with the CF-19 series of computers but I'm sure a few guys here can help.

I don't bother with the big screens for watching movies either. Not all of us have desks or big spaces to carry/set 17" computers.

"Every sailor I know just gets a big laptop, because they really don't need rugged one and ..."
yep ... until said laptop is sitting in the top rack and goes whistling off into oblivion when the ship pitches .
with a handle one has a good way to attach a lanyard and fasten it off to *something* .

It depends on what waters they are in. I have been rocking pretty good on these rigs before. We had our rig on the back of a heavy lift ship and we have hit some good patches of weather making the long crossing.

Took a 35* snap roll in a typhoon off the coast of Japan on a 1000' 96,000LT containership...

it gets real sometimes... and the little boats can be rough too.

"Sounds like some women I know...."

like my stepdad used to say : "it's a shame , all them potatoes and no gravy" .
or , as he was offering sage advice when i was 16 : "there's two kinds of women in the world ...
the good ol' big ones and the big ol' good ones" .
    ;) :p

the young man i sponsor was working in alaska , the ship he was on heaved violently in a storm (they were dead running for port when it overtook them) .
his laptop took a swan dive from his rack (top) hit the post on the set of racks 4 feet away and then onto the deck .
it really played hell with it , but i managed to repair it .
he was wrong for leaving his gear unsecured/not stashed ... there was plenty of time to take care of such matters .
i hope he learned a lesson ... but ... i aint holding my breath .
