    OK Guys -

Buy.Com has the Iomega BlackBelt #35327 ruggedized external HDD for $99.99 as one of their Black Friday specials; It is 1TB, 5400RPM, USB 3.0 interface; but the nice thing is that it's 100% USB POWERED - NO EXTERNAL POWER NEEDED!

    Buy.com - Iomega eGo 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive - Blackbelt

A quick look-over of the technical specs indicates that it's 2.5" form factor; based on the fact that the dimensions change when jumping from the 500GB to the 1TB size, I'm guessing it has 2 500GB drives stacked inside.

eGo Black Portable Hard Drive SuperSpeed USB 3.0: Iomega eGo Black Portable Hard Drive SuperSpeed USB 3.0, Black with Protection Suite

Under any circumstances I think it's a good deal no matter what you do with it; if you're just going to use it, the combination of 2.5" form factor and USB 3.0 is great at that price. If you dismantle it, you get 2 500GB 2.5" drives and a USB 3.0 SATA interface that supports TWO DRIVES. I can think of a LOT of ways to misuse THAT. Or, if you've got the money to blow, you can stuff it with 2 1TB 2.5" drives and...

    You get the idea.

    EDIT:

After noting another thread on this forum wherein they discuss installing the 12.5mm 1TB drives in a Toughbook caddy, I believe I may have been mistaken about the drive configuration in this unit. A little quick math indicates that the jump from 0.87" thickness to 1.02" does not allow for the thickness of a second drive; however it is almost EXACTLY enough to account for the shift from 9mm to 12.5mm format. This indicates to me that I'm most likely wrong; they probably only have a single 12.5mm format drive in this unit, along with the appropriate SINGLE SATA to USB 3.0 host adapter.

I'm sorry if I caused any confusion with this thread; I remembered seeing that Hitachi had announced a 9mm 1TB drive some time ago and assumed that format would quickly be adopted as the new standard.

Yup. ASSUME, etc. Move along folks, nothing to see here...

Yeah, I saw that this AM. Guess a lot of people besides me thought it was a great deal; maybe I'll get my chance at it after the holidays. :(

They have it available at other vendors for around $140; not nearly so attractive.
