I just purchased a little Fujitsu Q550 atom slate pc, and it has an empty MPCIE slot inside (for a wwan card). I want to know if I can use it for GPS as follows....
Shawn had pointed me to a ublox7 usb mini gps dongle (aka vk172), and I ended up not using it, since I already had a ublox 6 and ttl converter. I also wasn't sure if it would work with s&t since it outputs usb from the ublox chip directly and not uart?
So, will the VK-172 gps work with Streets and Trips?
Can I use that gps wired directly into a MPCIE slot's usb pins? or would I have to use an adapter with some sort of IC on it? I can make the adapter, or purchase one with vr and ic from china.
Thanks, again, y'all!

At one time MS Strips and Treets was sold with a usb GPS puck, So I imagine it would recognize a usb GPS stick

Can ya change the com port settings in twips and tweets?
May require a USB to serial converter (software) PL-2303 comes to mind.

Yes! It will work but you need to change the baudrate from 9600default to 4800. The port will display on DM as prolific or silcon lab depends on the dongle that you had.

Ty! That was all very helpfull!
S&T has to have 4800, but that's why I use xport; it can automatically convert the baudrate.
Good link on the software serial converter, that's just useful.
Thanks again, I'll report back after I hack it in. -

So, I received the unit in the mail, and I have to say, this thing is pretty f'n sweet!
Just install the ublox driver (500kb) and it automatically handles making it's own com port. I'm not sure if it's a hardware of virtual port, but it doesn't seem to impact the speed of this slow atom cpu. I'm running it through xport anyway, which handles baud for me/s&t.
For <$15, it's totally worth it!Shawn likes this.
OT> MPCIE DIY GPS, and adapter or mpcie pinout
