I like to think of Tupac as my Ghetto St Christopher.
While in areas of that nature, that I don't belong in, I like to play Pac just loud enough that it can be heard out of the car, but not so loud as to draw undue attention..... -

Arrests in [Occupy] Oakland protests rise to more than 400 -
Every year spent in California reduces your IQ by one. -

You should take Jeff up on his offer, if only for the trees between Arcata and his house. Definitely not Texas!

I do many things for a living.
For this company, I go around installing signs on convenience stores (C-stores). The signs are 32"x46". Ever seen dentaquest (cute little kid on it), vertex (advancements in HepC meds), or HIV (someone standing there saying they have it, and should have protected themselves)? Yup, that's it.
This time I'm doing more HIV signs, starting in Oaktown, and then on to Houston and McAllen.
It's a high pace non stop get'r done sort of thing, so I don't get alot of time to play; 18 hour days. but it pays well, and I get free trips to here and there.
Whoa! I just google mapped it. Arcata is a hair too far from SanFran/Oaktown....I appreciate the offer though, Jeff!
While in Oakland,I'll have to stay overnight: I'm assuming SanFran might be a safer place to stay? any words of wisdom???? -
Oakland is no more dangerous than most big cities. There are a couple of good places right on the water on Embarcadero pretty close to the airport. Mrs. Dogfish and I always stay at the Homewood Suites down there. The last time we were there it was full of Oracle types having a big Java convention. The help there is really great and they do a killer free breakfast. It's out of the way but handy to everything. And you can jump through the little tunnel to Alameda and look over the old naval air station where Mythbusters is filmed. If your work is in Oakland you don't want to stay in San Francisco, the traffic on the Bay Bridge is some of the worst I've ever seen!
CAP
There's a really good place to eat just down Embarcadero from Homewood Suites called Quinn's Lighthouse, has a good sports bar of the throw the peanut shells on the floor type and really good food. -
I'm 2 1/2 hours south of Arcata. Highway 101 corridor. I can see redwoods from here but they're ten miles away between here and the coast.
My wife stays on Lombard St at Lombard Motor Inn as it's easy to get in and out from the north. They take a taxi from there to their trade show. Walk to Fisherman's wharf and feel safe walking out to dinner etc.
She says the taxis are quite an adventure in themselves.
Cap's daughter may have a lead.
Jeff

In SF near Pier 39 they have the USS Pampanito WWII submarine - also a great tour. This was the sub they used a few years ago to film Kelsy Grammer's comedy "Down Periscope". They actually had it at sea under it's own power - after the film's producers paid for a whole bunch of restortion work.
OT: I'm goin back to DFW
