Knowing the technical expertise that exists in this forum, I will take if for granted that one or more of you have a PDA of some type. With that in mind, does anyone have a recommendation for GPS software to use on a PDA? I have an HP iPaq 4705 and I am using Windows Mobile 6.0. I recently purchased a GPS unit that will slip in the SD slot in the top of the unit and I was curious to get a reading on what seems to be the best software. Thoughts and/or recommendations are welcomed!

First, get VisualGPS for your operating system. A quick Google search will turn up a bunch of mapping apps, some shareware, some for sale. What you want to use it for, driving instructions, offroad, etc will be the most important determinant in your selection of application. I would look for one that lets you download free maps from various sources.

See if I-Guidance will work on your system... It just about the best out there.

A quick Google search yielded several free/shareware gps programs for Win Mobile 6. The one biggamehunter pointed to looks interesting but I didn't dig deep enough to find out whence come the maps. If you really want to do some work and have some fun learning about gis, its hard to beat OziExplorer. I haven't used I-Guidance since Rev 1.0. I didn't like the front end but the maps were fine. If you spend any time on the gps forums you will find that all 3 name brands, S&T, I-G, and TOPO SA have their rabid supporters and equally rabid detractors. One thing is sure, if you are using them for turn by turn driving instructions, they are not as smart as you are and you will get some very odd routes which are funny if you know where you are and really aggravating if you don't. Mrs Dogfish and I call the carputer running S&T Hyacinth in honor of poor Richard on the BBC's "Keeping Up Appearances" whose wife is the ultimate back seat driver.

I am a delivery driver and have used Microsoft Streets and Trips with great success. I had to use the 2005 version because it has the mobile app bundled with it. But I use my CF-25 now, soon to be CF-18 with newer S&T. On the laptop it allows for rout optimization, stop scheduling all sorts of cool stuff.

Will that software work on a cf-30? Went to their web site and it was not very helpful. I ended up loading a copy of the DeLorme software that I had and it works pretty decent. I-quest is quoting 99.00 for theirs and that seems a bit pricey. Think it is worth it? I noticed that co-pilot is up to about 149.00. That is even steeper!

Ice... Welcome back man! Yes... I-Guidance works VERY well on my CF-30! It has big buttons and is PERFECT for touchscreen. You can easily navigate with your fingertip instead of fighting a drop-down menu like S&T... I take my CF-30 with me everywhere.

Cabbies in different cities don't like me! ;)
