    My CF-29 is a ETN26KM

It was advertised as having 1.5GB of RAM when I bought it.

It ended up having 1.25 GB.

When I removed the 1GB SO-DIMM, it registers 256MB, but the model traces back to having 512MB according to the configurator at Panasonic's website.

Is the Onboard RAM on a removable daughtercard that could have been swapped out? Did the BIOS get wiped? Are there Jumpers?

    What's the deal here?

My first guess is that someone swapped out the motherboard. Verify the cpu onboard is correct according to the Panasonic configurator. Onboard ram is soldered to the board. Not something easily changed...

Chip is a 1.3GHz according to the BIOS and Windows.

Ugh. It wouldnt' surprise me if someone did swap out the Motherboard.
This laptop is starting to be more trouble than it's worth. (See my other threads, RE potential theft.)

But isn't the CPU, BIOS, and Onboard RAM all on one board? It should be pretty hard to separate.

cpu, ram, etc are all onboard. the mark 2s except for a select few have 256mb onboard memory. that model number shipped with 256mb on board and a 256mb added module. hence the 512mb.

    I see.

I was under the impression that they all shipped with all RAM onboard and empty SO-DIMM slots.

The 1.5GB in the advertisement and the Model number messed with me.

The seller is saying he will send me a 512 MB DIMM. I need to lift the keyboard to install it and remove a 256 MB DIMM...

Just to clarify, there is only ONE slot for memory, correct? It's on the bottom under a panel.

I think the seller owes you some money. A 1 gig stick is the largest you can install, and there are no other slots available. My Mk II only has 256 onboard as well, with 1.25 GB after installing a 1 gig stick.

If it was from ebay, you could always complain that it was not represented correctly, and return it. If you like the deal you got and want to keep the laptop, then work something out with the seller. Good luck with it.

ya if you remove the module thats in there then install the 512mb you will have 768, theres no mem slot under the kb, the only slot is under the "Best Buy" shaped cover on the bottom of the unit.

Just buy a 1GB stick and be done with it. It will have more power than you can handle then! ;)

Looks like I might be shopping for another CF-29 soon. :(

If I do, when I come across a unit that advertises 512 or 768 MB of RAM, how can I tell if it's got 512 on board?

If it's got 512 total, it could be a 256 on board and 256 in the slot... Or it could be 512 on board only, empty slot.

If it's got 768, it could be 256 on board and 512 in the slot, or vice versa...

They don't make 768 modules, so 1GB has gotta be 512 on board and 512 in slot. Likewise, 1.25 GB has gotta be 256 on board and 1GB in the slot... And 1.5 GB is obvious.

Just ask the seller what the complete model number is and then run it through the configurator. That should tell you. Personally I'd just assume that all will come with 256MB of Ram.... Then you can add the 1GB of Ram and be good. The diference between 1.28GB of Ram and 1.5 is not worth mentioning.
