Can we get a little more specific? What kind of "business" camera, security (CCTV), stills, something else? The 2.06Ghz processor coupled with the 257Mb ram is kind of throwing me here. For that processor you'll need a newish CF-52, CF-53, CF-31(?). Those are the ones I've been paying attention to, the Cf-19 and some of the fussy little netbook types probably would work as well. I just think the processor doesn't fit with the rest of the spec.

I agree Cap- that's why I asked. Daughter has a business (juice pressery) & wants a small camera system (?keeping eye on place?)- The specs sent made me think a CF-19 would not work and a CF-C1 might be too expensive- I searched Ebay by specs & price and found the ThinkPad T-400, T-61 and R-500 might work as all less than $200 dollars.

With a quick look I found a Panasonic WJ-HD220 8 channel CCTV recorder on the flea for under $200. Panasonic sells cameras for around $250. I can't imagine where these system minimums are coming from, I don't think you even need a computer to make the system run although there is some pretty interesting stuff about running your system remotely in the WJ-HD220 spec sheet. Where is the juice pressery?

Any link to the web site or the name of the equipment that needs that? Or did it say 2 ghz had to be dual core?

Thank you for the link. Juice press in North Bird Rock (La Jolla, CA). As you can imagine, texting back and forth with daughter in San Diego, CA. Sent me a picture of the PC system requirements, I believe they are the minimum for a wireless system off of a network. I did not even think of a recording system. I just picked up a Lenovo T400 Think Pad with Win 7 64 bit, core 2 duo, 2.26 GHZ, 2 GB RAM, 80 GB hdd, includes restore disc & free shipping, all for $123.50. If this does not work, they are on their own. I might look for a SSD to put into her (if it will even work). Thanks again for your leads. Cleve

Well I thought she might be a little more local than San Diego. We'll be in California next month but we avoid the coast anywhere south of Morro Bay so juice is out. Good luck with the Think Pad, I'd be interested in the origin of those specs if you ever find out.

1. Make sure that it will render output in a common, non-proprietary, format! Something like a MPEG-4 or a MOV that you can drop on a CD, DVD, or Memory Stick and the cops can playback with a common Windows PC.
2. Have a backup unit that you can loan out that will read and playback the output!
And, I will tell you why. So many people get these things and assume that when they capture evidence of a crime that the cops have some way of decoding all the different files that these things generate. Even the old analog sequencers and duplexers will throw most departments for a loop! It becomes a bigger problem if the evidence must be used for court!
I started using a PowerPC Mac (the shame...) for this work several years ago and almost got pushed into rendering this stuff useful to law enforcement as a side business! Once word go out that I could do it I was swamped with requests! I was too busy with my own cases to help them all but often thought that would make a great side business for the right guy...
But, for what it is worth, I would go with a dedicated Digital DVR and forget doing it with a PC. If you use the PC for anything else, specially if it is hooked to the Internet, it is going to become corrupted and it will fail when you really need it. That is my advice in regards to your original question. If you still decide to do it with software on a PC, do not use a laptop!
The last thing that you want is for the badguys to run off with all of your video evidence.... -
I don't "like" anything but I like this Bill. Very well put.

Thank you Azrial, I will pass this Great advice onwards towards the Left Coast....
