    Hi all,

I just put in a SAMSUNG HM160HC harddrive in my Panasonic CF-W5, and the laptop wont power up ... The battery charging light is on, but goes off when I push the power button. There is no other response whatsoever. When putting back in the old harddrive there is no problem powering up.

Is the harddrive broken, or do I need to change boot options or anything else in BIOS before changing the harddrive?

    Thanks for any help!

Have you tried resetting the BIOS to default and saving? (And then making sure the boot options are when you want them?)

You can sometimes get this result if you have the cable reversed on the drive.

Did you isolate the HDD connector, backside to be exact when installing into slot of the unit. It maybe touchning the aluminum case and it coz the short circuit. This happened when you don't have the oem plastic enclosure of the hdd or not properly isolated the connector mention.

I think the W5 needs a 3.3V drive. What is the drive model number that was in the unit before?. Check the voltage requirements as you may need to get a proper drive or modify the samsung to work. The mod was previously posted, it involves cutting a pin and or bending it.

I haven't had to do the pin/cable mod on any of the CF-t5/w5 I have. (5 T5 / 2 W5) I have read were it was still needed on the 4 series, I know for sure it was needed in the 1 and 2 series.

I have Y2, Y4 & W5. None require a special drive. I have replaced all with standard OEM models. In fact, I have also put a PATA-SATA adapter & SATA drive in my W5.

    Hi Guys,

I have a CF-W5 and would like to stick an SSD sata drive in it. Can anyone recommend a drive that fits? I have heard that this model laptop takes a physically smaller drive than the standard drives. I suppose I also need a PATA to SATA adaptor if anyone is using one, could you let me know what model your using? Many thanks...

The W5 does not require a smaller drive. However if you want to put a SATA SSD in there, it will probably be much easier if you get a 1.8" form fact unit, as you need to get the SATA-PATA adapter in there, as well.

Since the W5 does not have a caddy, but that flimsy plastic wraparound with the foam spacers on it, you can perhaps fabricate your own spacing after fitting in the drive and adapter of your choice.

    Good luck,
    Dave

Not sure how much room you have in a W5 but the regular adapter is a lot bigger than the redesigned one and a lot of the regular ones have been tested on here and do not work.

I've got a 1.06 Duo Core CF-W5 coming in less hard drive.

    1. Can I just use a USB drive & puppy Linux to see if everything is all jam up (Working)?

    2. What's the best proven hard drive for this?

    3. Being I want longevity of battery do I have to consider SSD & Windows 7 ?(It has XP COA)

    Thanks

1: Yes, you can boot from usb so thumb drive or cd/dvd isn't a problem.

2: it takes standard 2.5" IDE harddrive so just take your pick

3: That depends. Used battery and using XP I still get over 2 hrs battery life on mine. There is a on-off switch for the dvd drive so that helps some. Never had a new battery so It would be much longer than the one I currently have. You are going to be limited on SSD DRIVES because of the IDE interface, not really enough room for the adapter either.

I see you like 73 models. If you like older games try out a CF-73N/Q (Mk3) it has 1.7 CPU and is the only one with ATI 9000 card. It played F.E.A.R. without any problem. I have set up a couple of my kids with them for games.

wow all jam up & ready to go on the cf-w5 Just looking / shopping for the biggest battery for it....

Yep I actually started to use cf's cause I was tired of the repairs from my kids-

    1 of my daughters has the 74 & another a 1.4 73

    On a different thread? / thought -

A power adapter for a cf-74 has a cigaret lighter out put - Using that on the cf-w5 how small a solar panel could I get away with to run it off of? ;)

Well I liked this little booger so much I made the guy an offer to the other 2 he had-

    They're on the Way-

Question is where to find a deal on batteries looks like the 4400 Mha can be had for around $50 in a 6 cell but is there a larger?

PS if I get off the grid I'll know where to look thanks!
