I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there who either has one of these or is in some way involved with/knowledgeable about them...
    - I totally love that notebook (so far) and would like to buy it in (hopefuly near) future, but there are a few things I'd like to find out (re. buying it and some hardware details)

I might be able to help you. I'm reviewing the W2 right now. In general they make very well built products with quite a bit of innovation along the way.

well this doesn't really have much to do with the w2 but hey...

[?]first, I'm trying to find out as much details as I can about the lcd in that notebook. both 1024x768 and 16x12 versions; ie. who makes them, what's the colour depth (6 bit or 8 bit?), TN/MVA/PVA/IPS, response time, anything else that might be interesting...

mobile pc did a review in Feb of the one with the 16x12 screen and they said it's beautiful, but that's not much to go by

[?] there seem to be only 3 set configs available (short of memory upgrades at a couple of sites that sell them). I wonder if that's just Panasonic making it easy for themselves or if it's so hard/impossible to get inside (ie. taking the whole thing apart to install cpu, same for the first memory slot...) - I haven't found any pic of the bottom of it. Although the HDD is supposed to be easy to remove so that shouldn't be a problem, and I assume the RAM isn't either...

[?] and also, I just want to make sure it's possible to turn the touchpad off :)

I know I'm forgetting something but that should do for now.

You're not going to find out who makes the LCD panels, it's probably at least two companies. I went to dig at their site to see what else I could find, but the notebook site is down today. It's usually pretty bad for info anyway. I think your best bet is going to be to call them directly.

i did call them a few times so far... managed to talk to someone in sales once, gave me names of 2 companies in TO that were supposed to sell their toughbooks- one of them I couldn't even find phone number for, the other doesn't have them. as far as the hardware goes, they were clueless... ("what do you mean by LCD ?" (looking into spec sheet) " 15'' ? is that it ?") [8D]
