    CF-18 FAQ

I have talked to Alex about a new updated CF-18 thread a while back but just never got it done. We discussed this replacing the partial FAQ we currently have for the CF-18. I still don’t have all the pictures done like on the factory GPS install but I need to quit stalling and get it posted up, then just add pictures up later. This will be a work in progress and I will add the info to the first post to keep it clean. Besides I have a lot of time on my hands right now in this hotel room in Al Khobar, lol.

    The CF-18

The CF-18 comes in 5 different Marks or Mk. This is also sub divided into touchscreen or digitizer screen. Touch screen is just that touch with finger, pen or other object. The digitizer won’t work unless it has special pen for the screen.

Here is the break down of the model.

    Customer Special Configuration:

When a customer orders multiple units of the same configuration they are designated a Panasonic Customer Configuration Number which replaces the fourth & fifth letters in the standard model number.

In the event of the same customer ordering multiple units of different configurations, they are designated additional Customer Configuration Numbers....These configurations are not available in the Panasonic Configurator....these units can often be of a standard configuration with subtle additions such as external hardware....or more significant such as a non-standard Bios that disables the use of WLAN/Bluetooth/Modem.

A Customer Configuration is just that....tailored to the customers needs.

Example; CF-18xxx90xx....This number (90) is designated to Toyota (US)....the full model number is not available in the Panasonic Configurator....so the configuration....subtle or otherwise, is unknown!!

    DIGITIZER VS TOUCHSCREEN (DIFFERENCES)

With a touchscreen, there are 2 layers of connected wire mesh encased in a piece of glass or plastic that sits in front of the LCD. When pushed on an intersection connects and completes the circuit and that intersection is where the pointer jumps to.

The digitizer is a giant PCB (the size of the LCD) that sits behind the LCD and detects the presence of another circuit embedded in the stylus using a similar intersection idea. Where it detects it is where the pointer jumps to which is why you don't have to touch the screen for it to work but why nothing but that stylus will work. That's also why the front cover is just a plain piece of glass or plastic. (CREDIT TO: ZEROFLIGHT)

The other reason digitizer screens are beloved by some people is the difference in screen "depth" - A touchscreen has 3 layers of glass in the touch panel on top of the LCD; the digitizer has only 1, or in some cases NONE if they make the LCD extra heavy duty to handle people pressing on it. This removes the issues of poor contrast/color we CF-28 touchscreen users often lament; it also gets rid of the parallax issue where it's difficult to gage stylus location because of the screen depth. (CREDIT: MNEMENTH)

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic/226408-cf-18-swap-digitizer-w-touch-screen.html

OK, here are a few clues on telling the difference between a digitizer and touchscreen:

The pen holder slot on the touchscreen model is only 1/2" across Digitizer is about 1"

There will be a rubber seal flap on the rear left of the case for the serial port on standard touch model. Digitizers do not have serial ports. The serial port internally is used for the Digitizer.

Windows XP COA on the touch model. Tablets have XP Tablet edition COA

Designed for windows XP badge on the left wrist wrest. No badge on the tablet as they are designed for XP tablet.

The touchscreen cable harness has only two connector while the digitizer has three.

    DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MK’S

All bottom covers will interchange BUT there is a difference in the MK4,5’S cover/hole compared to the Mk1,2,3 the ram hole slot is bigger, the plate under the speaker cover to help secure the ram is different. I have used a Mk2 back plate on a Mk5, just harder to remove the ram with the cover on. (INSERT PHOTO)

There is a extra speaker wire on the Mk1 running to the audio out sound board. ( INSERT PICTURE)

Mk4 no TPM, Mk5 TPM other than that they are virtually identical.

    (MORE COMING SOON)

    XP HOME/PRO VS XP TABLET

XP Pro doesn't have digitizer drivers, you can install a digitizer driver to get it working. XP TABLET has the digitizer drivers as default.

Service pack 2 should solve Bluetooth driver issues on XP

USING WINDOWS XP PRO ON DIGITIZER MODEL THAT HAD WINDOWS XP TABLET

I only have XP pro installed not XP tablet pc. Is it possible to get my front buttons to work with only having xp pro?

Yes I am using xp pro and as I have said the buttons are working fine now
    OK here are the steps
    Install xp
If your disk is just xp or xpsp-1 upgrade to sp-2
Now a list of drivers in order
Wifi driver only from intel And have device manager unknown network device search in the folder you downloaded
Listed on the intel download site as English: 12.2.0.0_X_Drivers.zip Download
    Ver:12.2.0.0 Date:1/5/2009 Size:7133 (KB)

Video driver unextract to C: util and install and reboot
Sound driver unextract to C: util and install and reboot
Modem driver unextract to C: util and install and reboot
Now you can do the backwords hotkey stuff...
Hotkey plus driver download extract and go into device manager under the second unknown device direct to the plus driver and reboot
Now the same thing with the hotkey driver as above , note there is only one uknown device in the device manager
    then
touchpad driver/touchscreen driver install through device manager upgrade the mouse driver conitunue to reboot after each addition
    hotkey settings
    hotkey plus manager
    hotkey apendex

CF-18 Mk1 USB Stick Install Trick

"I just tested it with my USB stick. Booting up the stick with the harddrive doesnt work

    The trick is this :
1 - remove hard drive, then boot from USB stick.
2 - Shut down the Toughbook. insert hard drive, then the USB stick boots.

I used Ultimate Boot CD and some other USB loaders. They all work.

It seems that if you boot the first time with the hard drive in the notebook, that it doesn't boot from the USB stick."

    DAUGHTER BOARD

The factory daughterboard is need for the factory install of WWAN, GPS and BLUETOOTH.
    (INSERT PICTURE)

A CF-19 Daughter-board will work on a CF-18 opening up a M-PCI-express slot for your use and a usb slot. Then you can install GPS, WWAN or experiment with other cards.

"This is the word of precaution regarding the use of CF-19 HSPDA board(daughter board) into the cf-18. I've checked the schematic between the two and I've found out that one internal USB port is not align to supposed to be into the CF-18. The other usb port I suspect is a complete match into using PCIE term. and all line circuit line port for PCIE. The GPS in is line into ground automatically. It means even though if you don't have yet a GPS module on the PCIE card slot it will display on the bios having a GPS.

Now! I will conclude that the daughter board of CF-19 into the CF-18 must only be use for GPS installation using PCIE card. Nothing else. It is only a words of precautionary measure but if you gonna do further more. Go ahead and explore, Lol"

I just hope this helps out on a lot of the new CF-18 traffic we have. They have dropped way down in price now to become one of the new "entry" level Toughbooks. Now I just need to be home to do a lot of new snap shots. (I have noticed lots of CF-18 stuff on the web, older links not working now. The wiki pages don't have much on them, and even the GPS install that toughbookcentral had up is gone is now MIA "404".)

This is the word of precaution regarding the use of CF-19 HSPDA board(daughter board) into the cf-18. I've checked the schematic between the two and I've found out that one internal USb port is not align to supposed to be into the CF-18. The other usb port I suspect is a complete match into using PCIE term. and all line circuit line port for PCIE. The GPS in is line into ground automatically. It means eventhough if you don't have yet a gps module on the pcie card slot it will dispaly on the bios having a gps.

Now! I will conclude that the daughter board of CF-19 into the CF-18 must only be use for gps installation using PCIE card. Nothind else. It is only a words of precautionary measure but if you gonna do furthet more. Go ahead and explore, Lol

.... And my wife just finally gave up the nice 1.2GHz CF-18 I built her....

She says... "I just got a nice new Dell from work!"

    So now I have a CF-18 I need to rebuilt/rework/reload....

I have only posted so far what others have reported as working on the CF-19 daughterboard into the CF-18. I do have the parts to test this out, but haven't gone that far with it yet. I also had a sierra wireless card I was going to try out to see if it would work. I know it is recognized by my CF-19 with out a problem. If that would work I was going to get a Gobi 1000/2000 card and see if that would work.

I have experimented with a lot of stuff in the past and have been lucky it hasn't blown up. I even tried a CF-18 daughterboard with gps on it in a CF-28. Connector fits where the rim board goes but the unit wouldn't even power on with it connected.

    ADOR,
Just a big thanks for this thread. Now that I can afford a CF-18, I've bought two in the past month (MK3 & MK5 with 110 hours). Both are touchscreen. I[ve upgraded the RAM on both and am wondering if adding a SSD is possible. If a 2.5 SATA drive is too big with a SATA - IDE converter, then how about a 1.8. Oh, an observation. My MK5 has the rubber keyboard, and although I prefer using the chicklet keyboard, this rubber board is much softer than the rubber keyboard on my CF-28.
Thanks to all who share info here

You are welcome. Like I said these have become the new starter toughbook so I just tried to fill the void, and with help from everyone else here we did it. There are different ways to do it depending on what size SSD you want. Some have used the ide to SATA adapter with 90 deg angle. Need to do some cutting on the foam to get it to work on a full size 2.5" SSD. Also 1.8" SSD and adapter is also an option.

I have never seen that exact board. It looks similar the CF-19 WWAN board but it doesn't have dip switch or usb port on it. All of the WWAN units I had were pinned in boards. None of the were M-pci-e boards. If you can get it to recognize GOBI module 1000 or 2000 might work. May have to do the 20 pin mod on it. What model number CF-18 did that come out of if you know?

(Edit) Doing some more looking I see these came in around 2006.)

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panasonic-T...Modem-and-Sim-DL3U11520ABB-1-149/390411576362

If you could fine one of these cards with the hard to find voice out and it would take a GOBI card it would be a top notch setup.

Yes that was done before I installed the card. BTW my bios version is V2.10L10 and controller version is V2.00L14. If this is not the latest bios let me know as I have been unable to locate it on the various Panasonic websites.

Is the WWAN card showing up in device manager? Has this bluetooth been tested before?

Did you start with SP2 or SP3 on the install?

When I get home I will have to see what revisions I have in my CF-18's bioses.

No the WWAN card does not show in the bios and to my knowledge the BT module has not been tested. My reinstalll disk is service pack 1 and I immediately installed SP 3 before I did anything else.

I think someone before jumped from Sp1 to Sp3 before and it didn't install bluetooth. If it's not showing up in bios you may need to see if the connection cable is seated correctly.

    CF 18 Mk5 Driver List

A nice pdf list of all drivers for the Mk5 I thought others might find useful, and nice addition to the CF18 thread:

    mk5-winxp-install-instructions.pdf

This however IS NOT the correct order of installation. The order of installation, as the experienced know, is of paramount importance.
But this will at least tell you what many of the file names represent.

Basically install the touchscreen driver first prior to ALL others (even the mouse) as described in the Toughbook sticky on main forum page.

Then video, sound, and others...LAN the very last driver to install.

Instead of searching everywhere, thought this would be nice for someone who logically would go immediately to CF 18 FAQ.

Kind regards and thanks to everyone here for all the help and taking time to contribute.
Could not have managed (and remained sane) without it..

neSome information I have learned with all the CF-18's I have,Microsoft never released a stand alone copy of XP tablet, that is straight from them after searching forever.

Panasonic no longer has CF-18 recovery discs for sale, however they will image your hard drive for the same price of $35 with the correct copy of XP and drivers back to factory, just call them.

All of the other factory discs are $35 and they have tons of models. I spent a lot of internet and phone time getting this info from panasonic and microsoft,I hope as these are authorized factory it is ok to post.

Correct but you can use other makes restore disks. I use to use the factory restore disk from a Motion Computing LE1600/LE800. The disk is a two part system. Disk one is the OS, disk two is the drivers. I just loaded the Panasonic drivers before I got some of the digitizer restore disks.

I tried that the other day with a gateway disc set,it failed to run in the CF-18. It ran on my mk1 CF-19 but it was a mess, seems that the tablet disc has some added stuff on it from gateway.

But I like the gateway M 275 tablet so I will get another one and be in business.

This is the one I have, another option if you have something that can edit ISO files is to rip a copy of that ISO you have and find the gateway drivers folder and delete it. Then burn a new copy of the ISO. I know you can use poweriso for that, I think you can with magiciso also.

I have a CF18 mk4 touchscreen model. I had XP pro SP2 installed, and everything worked fine. Then I installed SP3, and the touchscreen stopped working immediately. Is there a driver that works for SP3? Touchscreen is enabled in the BIOS, but it is not working for some reason. Do you know if there is a common solution to this problem - I cannot be the only person to have XP Pro SP3 running on this spec machine, so I wonder if it is a common problem? Any help you can offer is much appreciated!

Thanks for your reply - no, I don't think so. I just updated to SP3. I tried updating the driver, but notice the Panasonic site only has a driver for SP2 (which is the one I am using). Does that matter?

It's got minimal software installed. Maybe I should completely un-install and re-install the driver? Thinking about it, I did install and run Malwarebytes and CCleaner before I downloaded and installed SP3 (to get rid of some malware) - could they have removed some reg entries by mistake?

I must confess I don't recall using the touchscreen after I ran those programmes (before I installed SP3). I know it was 100% okay sometime just before I installed SP3, but I can't remember if I used the touchscreen after I used the anti-malware programmes or not. I assume that if they're something to do with it, un-installing and re-installing the driver would cure that, as it would re-create any deleted or removed entries?

In any case, all of the above was within the space of a day or so, so I think there was a specific event that stopped it working - although it seems a bit of a coincidence that I had just installed SP3, I suppose the screen could have failed, rather than it being a driver issue? I hope that isn't the case though!!

If you have a ubuntu disk or can download and burn one test it out. Starting with ubuntu 10.10 touch works out of the box to make sure it is working.

I would try a full reinstall of the driver then we can go from there.

You can run Ubuntu or whatever as a Live CD..not installed at all as far as the HDD is concerned. Recommend this as a start.

Personally I run dual boot on most of my units. In that case I use the Ubuntu (or whatever) installer to load Linux alongside Xp on the hdd. I don't load it through M$ at all. Some do.

    Synopsis:
Load XP or W7 first. Boot Linux Live CD and run it. After testing it and if you chose to install to hdd let Linux install it.

On re-boot you will get a grub menu. (I don't know where the name came from)

    Choose which OS to run.

Simple answer above. More is available. :D

Mint 13 is a good choice for CF-18. Ubuntu 10.10 is EOL for updates. (end of life) My favorites are 12.04 mate and Mint 15 xfce. ( I have a Ubuntu 10.10 Custom CD that will run on anything that I use for testing.)(Custom just means I added my favorite tweaks and burned a custom disk)
If the Linux OS you choose gives a PAE error on boot then start with Mint 13.

    Jeff

    Thanks Jeff - very helpful.

I deleted and re-installed the driver, but no luck.

I don't really need the touchscreen, but it annoys me that it's getting the better of me so far!

I've been meaning to explore Linux, so that's next. I'm on annual leave over the next couple of weeks, so I will have a play with it and see what I can do. Should the touchscreen work right off the bat in Mint, or will I need to do anything to get it to work?

I'm no expert, so will just follow my nose and let you know how I get on!!

    Thanks

    Ramblings:
    O.K. back to basics.
Set bios to defaults and save.
Do a power pull re-set.....pull plug, pull battery power and hold switch on a few times to drain argumentative electrics from the mobo.
Plug in power only and do the bios again as above. (battery uses acpi stuff, we are giving the mobo time to get smart again with no distractions)
Call Rob and get a MK4 factory restore disk. :D (he will send you an .iso I think for a reasonable fee)<<<<<<<<<<
If the factory restore does not turn the TS on you have a bad panel.
Or...use non Pana disks and prepare to be frustrated. Doable but time consuming.
    Did you try deleting SP3?
On MK4 device manager your touchscreen will be under mice and other pointing devices/touchpad/touchscreen.
Go ahead and run the SP2 touchscreen driver.....I use Panasonic CF-18 drivers jp as a search. If it does not support you haven't lost anything.
Better yet load the complete list of drivers in order from the jp site. Instructions are there too plus available here. Install in order. You said you had a week. :)

For a test follow ador's advice as above.

Good luck and for the record, what is your complete model number from first page in bios. The one on the bottom may be wrong.

    Jeff

Man! for sure its the dreaded ts issue. Mild heat can create that problem. It will be "on and off". Means sometimes it will work and sometimes dead.

TS life is on stage of retirement need a maintenance to get it back again like new.

Thanks Jeff - I'll try Ador's advice. I will also check the sticker against the model number in the bios. My money is on it working with Linux though - just a gut feeling. I don't really need it in XP anyway - especially if I can get it to work in an alternative OS...

I'll report back with progress (assuming I make any!) in due course!

I am getting ready to post up my CF-18 for sale and wanted to know how I can get an idea how to price it? The prices are all over the place on Craigslist and eBay and I was wanting to know how I can get an idea what to list for. Any ideas?

Yes the prices are all over the place on ebay from $100 to $450 but are the higher price ones selling...NO. A little while ago I sold my 18MK5 for $250 shipped. Nothing fancy but in very good shape, no marks on it at all. What kind of shape is yours in, every thing work on it ?

2 weeks ago, i bought 6 CF-18s mark 4 for 160 euros a piece. Including bluetooth, wifi, and the GPRS option. Not bad ?

Also, i installed Windows XP sp3 on all, and do not have any problems using the touchscreen. The CF-18s i bought from London are all ex-sewer water ones.
