This Panasonic CF-45 Toughbook is taking an extremely long time to shut down, what can I look into to solve this problem please? It is running win98SE and I have tried defragging.

Have you looked to see what applications or processes might be running to cause it to close down slowly? You should be able to click Ctrl/Alt/Del and select "Processes" to see what the hold-up is.

Don't understand? When I select Shut Down, the MS Windows 98 logo is on the screen saying "Windows is shutting down" and this screen is there forever but pressing ctrl+alt+del at anytime pn this screen does not bring up the task manager?

Bring up the Task manager while in windows (before shutting down) and see what is running. Whatever is holding up the shut down could also prevent TM from coming up, if it even can from that point in the shut down.

I think you can also shut down from the task manager, and see if that goes any faster.

Shut down from the TM does not go any faster, I am seeing 7 items running in the TM, should I disable one and try the shut down and then do another and so on?

Is that 7 applications running, or 7 processes?[ did 98 show processes?]

TB might be able to answer that. For w98, I think I would reboot into safe mode and see how quickly that started and shut down compared to a normal boot, then reboot with the option to confirm each step to see what is running. You might be able to identify some options there.

7 applications, no processes are being shown. Safe mode shuts down immediately.

I seem to recall this issue back in the day of Win98 there was a problem with the infrared port not letting the system shut down. try disabling the IR port and see if it helps. Other things that can cause this is a conflict between the BIOS power features and Windows power features. try disabling the advanced power management in windows and see if it helps. And last but not least make sure you have the correct video driver for the unit.

    Mike -

Another issue I've had with Win98 not shutting down is if you have Windows Networking installed, and at some later point unplug your network cable. Win98 will spend FOREVER trying to close down the connections it thinks should still be there. Try plugging a network cable into it (if it's not already) & see if that makes any difference.

Other times, I've had damaged installations of the network adapter cause similar problems; the fix was to uninstall the card, shut down, reboot without the card a couple times, then try and reinstall it.

Don't ask how it is that the files get damaged; the fact that it's running FAT file structure is enough - Win98 literally beats itself to death because of that.

*Maybe not the RIGHT thought, but a thought nonetheless*

    Hi All-
This is a known Win98 problem. Go to MS updates and do all the Win98 updates. It will be there. It is the Win98 shutdown update.

It is networking related and this will fix it.
    have fun :)
