    Good afternoon

I have just bought the above from a public auction, when i plug it in to the charger the orange baterry light comes on for a few seconds then goes off. The toughbook won't switch on as i presume its flat. I have tried reseating the battery and power cable but still no difference.

Has anyone got any ideas, are there any battery tests i can do?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Dan

On some of the 18's I just got in the power boards are bad where the battery clicks in to. Try removing the battery completely and try powering on with NO BATTERY.

Also please provide the full model number of your "Tpughbook" CF-19.

    Thanks :)

I've seen such behavior when CF-19 can't recognize one of it's cards (Intel 6200 Wi-Fi for example). Try to pull out WWAN at first, then Wi-Fi. It may help :)

One more idea - battery is discharged too much, wait for some time and try to turn on again.

Thank you for your promt responses, the model number is CF-19CHBAXBE

I have tried leaving it plugged in this evening 4 hours but still no good, i think the charger may be duff as it didnt even get warm. Its not an original charger and it says 19v 4.74A on it should this work?

I have tried removing the battery and switching it on with the power cord in but still no good.

Not sure i want to dismantle it just yet to remove the Wifi card , any other suggestions?

    Regards

That would be the wrong charger. Hopefully it didn't damage anything. The correct charger is rated 16V 3.75A 60W, 16V being most important. The amperage can be higher. Buy a genuine Panasonic charger, not a cheap Chinese knockoff. There are also compatible IBM chargers.

That looks like the correct one. :) It's hard to tell from the poor picture. Just make sure the label says Panasonic.

Higher voltage is not a problem too :)
19V charger will charge CF-19 as well :)
Maybe this charger is dead or has incompatible plug.
Best replacement is IBM X40 (etc.) charger. Ten bucks and works very well :)

Ok Thank-you for all your help, providing the charger i ordered does the trick the next problem i face is installing a operating system from a usb drive. Am i able to do this or do i need to buy a usb cd drive? Can i use a normal version of XP pro or windows 7 or does it need to be specific to the toughbook?

Once again any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Dan

19volt may very well be a problem. More than one member has blown fuses using chargers that much in excess of 16volt. Since the OP is a newbie I strongly advise against giving advice which might cause damage to his computer. Some IBM chargers are fine, the 16 volt ones.

Yes, you should be able to use a USB stick to install XP. You will need a USB floppy drive to install the SATA driver or you can slipstream the SATA driver into your XP disc.

In the case of clean installation of Windows XP

The floppy disk will be used for the installation‚ so please do NOT remove it.

(If there is no floppy disk in it‚ the instruction to insert it is displayed.)

There are a lot of drivers to download and install. Start here: Toughbook Computer Support - Search Downloads

Getting everything to work properly can be problematic.

You will be much better off if you can find a factory restore disc.

Windows 7 can be much more challenging to get working properly.

Myself I would buy a cheap external USB DVD drive enclosure here Laptop External USB CD DVD ROM Portable Drive Enclosure for $8.37 and put a DVD in it and pickup a CF-19 MK1 restore disk. You will not have to put in your XP COA numbers/letters , this is done automatically. About 30 minutes and you are up and running :D or you can spend 3+ hours downloading and installing drivers and hoping you get it right

I've only done 1 CF-19, but a full clean install of 7 ultimate went very smoothly and needed few xtra drivers.
