My HP laptop at home finally bit the dust. I was really getting tired of moving my CF-30 in and out of the house every day. I wanted to get another TB but the wife talked me out of it![]()
I ended up getting a Sony Z series. It's only 3.2 lbs! Try picking up the Tb then this thing! The screen is an 1/8" wide, it has the chicklet/raised keyboard kinda like my TB. The nice part is all around the keyboard is like a stainless steel fascia. I have to admit this thing is freakin blazing fast, now I know what the normal people are playing with these days.
Please dont hold it against me! I am still a diehard TB man.........

Toyo,
Shouldn't this be posted on a different forumJust kidding, nice looking machine but, no coffee, no adult beverages, and you for sure don't want to drop it! Enjoy,

Only Macbooks are to be considered sins.
-
Yeah, from the title I thought "Oh he's gone and bought a macbook".
-
God No! If I accidently break it it's the TB's fault for allowing me to use a computer like a man, not a woman.
Talk about bloatware. This thing has, had more crap in it than a beached whale. It did come with XP downgrade which was nice. -
When I saw the thread title... I was expecting.....

The day I quit using Toughbooks as my laptops, is when Apple releases a MacTough. (Unlikely to happen though). -
Toyo
The Z series is one of the most popular laptop models on the market these days
If you would of posted here before buying I would of tried to get you to look at the Toughbook alternatives, the cf-74, cf-52 or the cf-f8
I am a diehard Toughbook guy , I like the way that Panasonic builds these toughbooks
Macbooks as the others here have stated are the only true sin
The Sony is sort of like a indiscretion

I've turned die-hard as well. I couldn't imagine just throwing around any other type of laptop and having it survive... And I don't treat it near as rough as they are meant to be treated... But it is nice knowing I can.

I know exactly where yall are coming from. I have to admit that was the 1st time I have ever not properly thought out a purchase like that. I talked to Rick last week about possibly getting a used 29, but it's my son who will be using the Sony the most. I would hate to get a 29 setup like I want it and not be able to use it like I would want. Who knows, maybe I will have a really good March and get myself another TB. I really like what Rick does.
You guys can give me all the crap you want. That is why I posted it here for you to know. I know you guys will give me a knock up side the head, or a pat on the back and I don't take it personally. Remember, this is one big family right?
My wife came back in town today, she saw that Sony and just rolled her eyes. She knew the HP had dies while she was gone, but she could not believe I went out and replaced the next day. Heck it took me 3 months to decide on the CF-30. -
Hey Capt, you gotta look at this durabilty test from Sony. I was cracking up. Be sure to read the sidenotes about what happened after the test, and think about how they worred them. Talk about covering your butt!

Toyo,
Its a very nice looking box. The testing is cute, 1/4 cup of water? In the old days I could spill that much rum getting some in the glass. Someone should send Sony some of our pictures like a CF-19 out in the rain! Seriously, as I said its a nice looking box, but what's with the delay in shutting down after the water test, is Vista really that slow? On another matter, I don't know about Mrs Toyo, but Mrs Dogfish can't tell a CF-28 from a CF-30 so its all good until the CF-18 comes out, she knows that's different!

OOOH SNAP!!! You are SOOO off my buddy list!!!
lol, congrats on the Sony, that machine looks awesome! -
If I bought another TB I wouldnt be able to keep my mouth shut, thats why! LOL
Cap, you are so right. "The laptop shut down with no issues" Yea, I bet it did. It just never started back up. I should have gotten the "I am a dumb plan" and poured water on it too see what happen. -
If you've ever torn apart a Macbook or G4 you'd see why they are pretty stable. Very well grounded but improper charging while using the Laptop can cause problems.......typical problems are overheating. After all they're not desktops but people keep pushing them. Seeing its an Intel machine heat issues will pop up. You'd think Apple would learn a lesson from Panasonic or AMD at least about making a Processor based on IPC and clean OS so Freq can be lowered thus lowering Heat.
Those little mini-laptops are "cute" and generally are snapped up by the Missus. You'll have to make a command decision and buy the Toughbook anyway. LOL. I'd go with what Capt. Dogfish said cause would she really be able tell the difference?
SIN -
Boy, that came from left field. I shall point out my wife does not really care or raz me about my purchases. Yes, she would be able to tell the difference between different models. She kinda likes these things herself.
Now, with that being said......... I am returning the Sony tommorow. It's not making my clock tick very loud. Like I discussed with my wife this morning, I am going to look into another TB. I believe it has gotten in my blood. I am huge foriegn car kind of person. I seem to have this awful distaste when I drive anything else, or look at one. No other computer can live up to a TB in my mind. So, with that being said, throw some suggestions out there. I am all ears.
Yes, my friends. I am one crazy, loose nut! -
The new Cf-f8
Cf-74
Cf-52

You know what would be awseome? If Panny made a "Netbook" that was built like a Sherman tank. Something that is small enough to throw in your glove box, backpack, toss it in the saddle bag on your motorcycle, etc.
My situation is kind of two fold. I need to get my son something to do his homework on, study, etc since the HP died. A Netbook would be perfect for him but I am so afraid of it breaking in 6 months.
2nd, I would like to have another laptop besides my CF-30 to keep in my house. My 30 I keep in my van. I'm tired of bringing that sucker in. For some reason I am so paranoid about the "Total Hours" on the machine. Do people even look at something like that in the real world, or do WE make to much of it? I do not need anything that is super powerful, simply to do some work stuff, alot of freakin emails, but the key is it's got to be tough. I hate to drop 4K on something new for this type of use. I will more than likely buy another 30 this summer for work. I am expanding baby!
-
Toyo,
Total hours is of interest only to you! When was the last time you saw a reference to it on eBay. Remember that many of the ex-Government Toughbooks we buy have been in Police cruisers for years, they are some of the cleanest ones. Other than backlights wearing out I can't think of a problem with total hours on a toughbook. I'm not that familiar with the smaller and semi-tough Toughbooks but Alex is, I'd look to him for advice.

"Mrs Dogfish can't tell a CF-28 from a CF-30 so its all good until the CF-18 comes out, she knows that's different!"
When I purchased my 30 and initiated spousal integration procedure, it was fairly uncomplicated. Spouse: "What is that?" Me: "Old laptop. Isn't it amazing how design has improved in the last few years."
Spouse: "Where did you get it?"
Me: "Found it with some old gear at work."
Spouse: "Oh, it didn't cost us any money then?"
Me: "Not much." -
Capt, thanks for that piece of comfort. I need to send my 30 to Panny for a buzzing sound that changes while I adjust the display brightness. It's getting louder over the days. I have 2900 hours since June/08. That figures out to almost 14 hours a day. That's what had me concerned, but I guess I should stop fretting about it thanks to you.
Your a good man Cap!
