Is is possible for my CF-50 power adapter, a solid state/sealed device, to fail after 6 years? Can they be fixed? The laptop lights up, works and charges fine with another power adapter with the same voltage/plug (tested using my higher amperage rated CF-52 adapter).

    Yup -

I fix 'em all the time. Of course, I have 20 years experience in the electronics repair industry and a fully equipped electronics repair workbench. Oh, and an AAS in Electronics Tech & Engineering.

Prolly NOT cost-effective for you to assemble all that in order to repair a switch-mode power supply you can replace for +/- $40.

I've got some very high quality IBM OEM 4.5Amp power supplies which work very well with the new style 2.5 x 5.5 mm plugs. I use them in preference to Panasonic units as they are very compact. $11.00 shipped Priority Mail.

I am using an OEM IBM power supply with my CF 50 also, and I agree that it works very well.
