What service pack is the cd? Try a cd with no service packs. The later editions of XP have more hardware requirements and can stall on slower machines.

Right forum, wrong place. The Buy-Sell-Trade forum is a sub-forum of the main one. Just scroll down, not too far, there are some stickies and FAQ's that are well worth reading. Right after them you will find the nut house we call the Toughbook Forum. Welcome,

I had this issue and it was exactly as Shawn described. Try an earlier version of an XP Pro install... Even if it is (Dare I say) a Dell Installation CD.

Yeah, and truthfully, the Mk1 is a poor candidate for XP anyways; it only came with Win2000. 384MB max RAM means it will be hashing the HDD swapfile constantly; therefore will be very sluggish. I recommend Win2000 or Ubuntu for these machines.

I can't BELIEVE I used to happily run XP on only 512MB all the time...

I ran Windows XP (sp1) on an old Compaq Armada 1592DT laptop. Yeah,

96 mb ram, 4 gig harddrive, and only a Pentium uno (1) with 233Mhz. It worked okay, i only used XP for a little kid, who played games on it. Not too slow... Hehe. But of course not much multitasking pleasure with 96 mb rams....
