I just noticed that the Ram that is installed on the CF30 MK3 that I got over the weekend has 2 different brands, 2 different speeds.
Slot 1
2048 Bytes
PC2-6400 400 MHZ
Manufacturer: Elpida
Slot 2
2048 Bytes
PC2-5300 333 MHZ
Manufacturer: Samsung
The seller tells me that the tech he has that does this stuff for him is new and is about to be fired because he doesn't seem to know as much as he thought. LOL. He said the 1st slot should be the original, I told him Panny uses Panny Ram. The specs show it takes PC2-5300, but I am not sure of the Mhz? With Ram being so cheap these days, what do you guys suggest I go get? Brand? More Mhz? Yes, he will reimburse me for this. I just always have thought you should never use 2 different sizes, and brands?
Thanks!

Should be PC2-5300, DDR2-667, max of 4GB. With either the 333 or 400 you are shorting yourself on RAM speed. Should be able to pick them up for less than $40 a 2GB stick (plus shipping).
-
Thanks for the input. I was looking at getting 2 sets of DDR2-667. Where does this coincide with what you suggested? This Ram crap can get confusing! Wouldnt the 6400 be faster tha the 5300?
-
You have to be careful of the bus speed (and not the one getting ready to run you down!) Both of the ones you mentioned that were already in the 30, were not the correct bus speed (667). While they may be compatible (and then again they may not, or they may not run correctly), the two sticks of PC2-5300/667Mhz are exactly what is required according to the computer specs.
-
I suspect there is some confusion here; the RAM labeled pc2-5300 should be ddr2-667 mhz, and the ram labeled pc2-6400 should be ddr2-800 mhz which actually exceeds your requirements, but will quite happily run at the slower speed.

All engines ahead full - RAMming speed! -
OK, Got it! I just bought 2 2Gb sticks. Crucial DDR2 PC6400. I realize now that it will downgrade to the highest possible speed, but they had this on sale for $15.00 bucks less than the PC5300. This is the same one's I have been running in my MK2 for a year now with no problems.
It clicked in my thick skull to look at my MK2 to see what I added then, I know it works, so that is what I went with and with them being on sale it made even more sense. Total cost was $34.95
It's not smoking yet, so I suppose I am OK! -

A smoking toughbook.... would make for a cool photo op though

Smoking is right! If I would have known there was such a difference between MK2 & MK3, I would have gotten the 3 alot sooner. The best way I can describe it is going from 1Gb of memory to 3 Gb's. It really is that much faster, more options, and TB warned me, the 1000 Nit is simply amazing.
My wife asked me today if I was going to sale my MK2! How dare her ask such a crazy question. Unless of course somebody makes me a great offer -
I know the feeling with the speed. At home I have a CF-52 1.8 w/4GB I use in place of a desktop and here at work (when I am in the non-secure area) I use a CF-74 with the same core duo and 4GB. No waiting around here buddy!

Sorry to jump in on this one a little late!! I'm happy to see that you picked up the Crucial memory. I have had only one Crucial laptop chip fail in the some 100+ chips that I have installed in customer's and my own computers. It's actually what I am running in all three of my toughbooks (28 MK3, 29 MK2, & 18 MK2). I was going to suggest looking here for the pricing. I like getting the double packs since if one chip fails for some reason the warranty will *usually* replace BOTH chips, giving you two new chips instead of one new / one old. The one time a crucial chip popped on me, they sent out two new at no cost and told me to just deposit the others in the circular filing cabinet. The nice thing about Crucial memory is that it can be successfully overclocked, Usually in Desktops, although I have heard of people doing it in Laptops as well. It's a little too risky for me to play with timingin a laptop since as you overclock, you create more heat, which is one of the biggest enemies in a laptop. Desktops have all that nice space to add quadruple fans and 100,000 RPM 25 pitch bladed fans that belong on model helicopters, not desktops.. Anyway, I had used Liquid cooling for a while, THAT's where the fun was!!! My case had Cryogenic coolers in it. I got a sample from a company that was comming out with a new case. IT was something to behold, and at $600 retail per case, I was glad I beheld it as a sample!!
The other chip that I have had a 100% sucess rate with is Ultra memory. I like ultra since they have a lifetime warranty as long as you register you purchase within 30 days. As a matter of fact, Ultra has this with all of thier products. Hence, one of the reasons I origionally bought from them. They do back it too. About a year ago I had an Ultra-surge suppressor / protector that I bought about 5 years previously. At that time they were offering the '$5,000.' guarantee on any connected parts as well as the replacement of the part. We had one heck of an electrical storm move through. It came quick and I was rushing to get all of my sensative equipment un-hooked and all of my antennas flipped to the lightning-surge/ground circuit. I had just finished that when BAMB (I thought they dropped the big one in my back yard!!) All of my HAM equipement survived (about 15K worth) that was on four of the Ultra protectors, but my Computer (REALLY nice custom job) took a hit through the LAN & Phone lines on the protector, which I'm guessing caused the whole shootin match to just cascade through, cause it was a smokin' let me tell ya...Needless to say, after my blood pressure came back down from 300/240mmHg, I made sure nothing was still burning, and looked at the damage. The Ultra-Surge Suppressors/Protectors saved 3 HD tvs, 4 HD Cable Boxes, 3 HD DVD players, a 7.1 Surround system, a 5.1 system, 2 VCRs, 3 other Desktop computers, 3 Laptops, and various other electronics. 5-suppressors gave thier lives to save my equipment, and the other one failed.
So I called Ultra (Storm was a sunday afternoon, so I called first thing Monday), they sent me out 8 new Suppressors, (2 boxes of 4 to make it easy for them) that I recieved via FedEx, Tuesday evening at 6pm! For the electronic equipment they asked me to get the estimate to repair/replace in via mail or fax. I had it in, faxed to the reps desk, that afternoon (Monday) and on Friday I had a check covering ALL of the damaged equipment (Just under 5K)!!! BEST PART??? not a single $.01 on my home insurance and NO deductable. They did ask that I send them the fried ones back and included the pre-paid shipping labels and folded boxes in the shippment they sent me! As far as I am concerned, they have a customer for life!!
I try to tell others about them. To me, even if it costs a little more, and I know the customer serivce is top notch, oooooh ya.. I'll spend it!!
Anyway, let us know how those modules work out for the TB.

No smoking yet! Mot one blip so far

Wanna hear something weird? I got the same sticks you did (I think) Crucial 667... 2 matching sticks of 2GB... When I look into the memory config with Everest to get the dope on each stick... One shows as Crucial Memory and the other shows as Samsung. The specs, timings, etc are exact... The only thing that shows differently is the serial number and the manufacture date. As a matter of fact... The stick that does show as Crucial actually shows a manufacture date of week 7/ 2014... So maybe it is back to the future for me!

TB, that's funky!
I never even knew that Samsung made memory sticks until I saw the one that was installed on mine. But, you know me
Does Samsung have a pretty good rep on there memory, as good as there SSD are getting from people? I know alot of people are raving about some of there SSD's.
