here is the start of the react os thread ...

and right out of the bag ...
i loaded react on an asus A53E laptop i had kicking around just to see what i might expect from a '31 .
the os installed ok ... i turned of that UFEI (?) in the bios and had no problems loading the os .
it popped up with "i wanna load some drivers" ... sooo , i went to the asus site and got the drivers ...
put them on a flash drive and the comp won"'t "see" the usb ports !
i am going to try to turn on the UFEI in the bios and see what happens .

i tried a couple of things to get the drivers into the comp so i can load them .
i *finally* pulled the hdd that react was on and stuffed it into my 'nix/W7 forensics machine ...
i booted into the windows side and the comp saw the react os drive ... i opened it to administrator documents and made a folder to put the drivers into .
downloaded the drivers , extracted them and then transferred them to the folder i created .
now , i will take the react drive and stuff it back into the laptop and see if i can actually make some headway .

    i have a lenovo t400 and a t that is a 13 inch .
    i will try the '31 tomorrow .

I tried this OS myself and didn't get it to boot a couple of years ago. Couldn't get live version to work as well. I was able to get a image to work in virtual box though. Haven't tried it again since.

    yeah ...
about the same thing here .

i have not managed to install the network driver so i can get some needed items downloaded into the machine .
one would think the developers would have concentrated on that portion above all ...
not to mention including a browser so that one can go get stuff .
i am going to check at the website for some information .

Are you trying the release version or the nightly build?

haiku is a spinoff of BeOS ...

I thought I posted that ReactOS will not boot on a 52 mk3. I don't see the post???
Haiku seemed to hang at the "Haiku' screen.

    it is there ... i think ...
"Nightly build is supposed to be better. I Dunno.
Live will not load on a CF 52 mk3 i5"

as soon as i get some time i am going to dig a little deeper into this subject but it sure looks like the OS is a kludge of pieces-n-parts .
i have dealt with POL and WINE before , an example ...
    i wanted to run CS-2 on linux ... i used pol+wine ... it turned out that i needed some patch code/dlls .
i will be the first to admit that my coding skills are about as worthy as a screen door on a submarine , hence i looked at a company that would "build it for you" ...
yeah , for a price that was way too deep for my pockets .

Now I see the post. Lack of sleep is getting to me.

If OSX was just a bit more hardware friendly, Mr Bill could get squashed as far as I am concerned.

OSX (or any of them) were designed for left-handed , limp-wristed types ...
us right-handers do not deal well with being treated as dumb sheep ... well , to the degree that jobs wanted his minions and customers to be .

i did not have the wherewithal to mess with either OS last night .
that new job has a fair amount of fire-puttin'-out to it .

I feel OSX has it's place. Sometimes I want a easy to use secure OS without the extras.
Definitely not a do all OS. Would be good for a grab and go machine that uses public wifi.
All of the hardware limitations does seem to fit into your description.

But, Larry how do you really feel about OSX? :D

Being a glutton for punishment and always up for a challenge I decided to give it a try.
My CF-30 MK1 4GB, Touch screen, Running Windows 10 nicely I tried React OS 0.4.1 Live from a CD I burned from the ISO.
It seemed to load OK but after trying to load hardware all it found was the screen resolution and the touch pad.
No other hardware appeared to be found.
Has anyone had luck with drivers? If so how did you install them?
I will try again this evening with the driver bundle on a full install to a spare hard drive and let you know how it goes.
    Later,,,,

    Bob

i have not fired up the react machine ...
yer right ... it is a real hassle to make this os do anything even 1/4 as easy as can be done on a 'nix OS .
granted , they have not had the development resources that the sundry flavors of linux have , but still ...
i do not see where the OS is really all that much further along than it was a few years ago .

I've wasted 5 hours with ReactOS-stable last week.
Judging by this experience, Unix/Linux + Wine seem to be orders of magnitude better than ReactOS in key areas like
    - Hardware support
    - Windows compatibility
    - Ease of use.

    So...why choose the lesser evil?

    yeppers ...
that is my opinion as well .
methinks the os is something akin to kicking a dead horse .
