My Toughbook (CF-19) has a 'Windows Vista Business OEMAct, Panasonic' COA on the bottom of the unit. When I extracted the key before reformatting - it was a 'Windows XP Professional' Product Name and the Product ID code has 'OEM' in it...and I can confirm this upgrade was last OS installed (w/ Service Pack 3) - but there was the tablet functionality.
This extracted product key isn't working with any version of Windows I try installing. XP Pro, XP Pro Tablet 2005 OEM, Tablet XP OEM. Any insights? -
You will need restore disks for your model
That is the easiest way as you have to install sata drivers when you use a regular disk
Available for $30 or so on ebay or from Hearland services in the USA
Post your full model # and I will link to the proper disks or find the part # for them

Try this seller on ebay
Message him and say that you need xp tablet restore DVD for a cf-19 mk-2 digitizer

If he does not have them you can purchase from Heartland services, do a google search for their phone #

Based on the fact that you DO NOT have a Windows XP COA on your laptop, I suspect one of the two following scenarios:
Your "extracted" product key (and therefore your Windows XP install) may have been from a pirated copy of Windows XP (There are literally HUNDREDS OF VERSIONS that have been circulated on the internet by now), or it may have been an automatically generated key from a "Site license" copy of XP. NEITHER key is valid; the Pirated copy for obvious reasons, but the site license key because that license DOESN'T BELONG with the PC - it ONLY belongs to the company that bought the site license, and it is NOT TRANSFERABLE.
You have three choices to acquire a legal install of Windows on your machine:
Buy a Retail copy of Windows XP complete with COA (A choice you may not like, since you CANNOT BUY XP Tablet PC edition - it was only sold to OEMs and system builders)
or:
Reinstall the correct version of Windows Vista as appropriate to the COA on your laptop
or:
Buy an upgrade version of Win7 and do a clean install. Your Windows Vista COA has at least some value there; it entitles you to use the less expensive Upgrade version to install Win7, then you'll have BOTH COAs.
No matter what you do, unless YOU have a site license for whatever version of Windoze you want to run, you HAVE TO HAVE A COA for that version to be legal.
At this point, I'll take a moment to remind my fellow members that TPTB at notebookreview.com frown on discussion of how to circumvent ANY form of security or licensing on your laptop; it is VERBOTEN.

Go ahead. Ask me how I know. -

I looked up the part # and it is licenced, using restore disks for the xp downgrade
So like most newer Toughbooks it has Vista and XP as options
Alex -
Alex -
If the previous owner BOUGHT the downgrade, it would have EITHER one COA with BOTH keys (Like they did with the dual-boot models), or a second key for the downgrade option. Microsuck does NOT play nice with their licensure; they WILL stick it tooya if they find out you have a privately owned laptop with an OS OTHER than that described on the COA.
I went through all this myself on my Dell XPS-M1330; it was SUPPOSED to be eligible for the "free downgrade" to XP, which I requested; when I got, it had Vista on it and ONLY a COA for Vista. I went round and round with them over several afternoons; of course the phone banks in India outlasted me, so I just used one of my student license COAs on it.

Even dragons must choose their battles... -
For some reason the two keys are not shown on the COA, and have not been there since the cf-28 models
All my newer models are licensed for both, but one O/S at a time and they come with both disks
Official specs on his model

I got nuthin'. You say you own one made that way I'll believe you; but that does contradict everything I've been told in my own very similar case.
Since they're both OEM Version install disks I don't imagine Setup is going to demand the Key anyways unless you try to install on something other than a Panasonic... but it REALLY irks me to find out yet again that M$ tells one thing to one customer and something completely different to another, especially when I'm the OTHER.

*Flips M$ the bird just on GP* -
This link has some info,
http://www.reasonco.com/products/software/vista/vistadowngraderights.htm
Just checked my cf-30 mk-2 and same situation , Key for Vista only
Advice is to buy the restore disks, You are right oem will not work as there is no keys provided
Alex -
According to this, once you "downgrade" you STILL cannot activate automatically; you have to call M$ activation line and talk to someone. Does the Panny restore disc actually have the OOBE timer enabled? I've had some Dell restores that didn't...
mnem
Micro$uck... ehh. What more do I need to say. -

Well... that document echoes what the M$ document says - that they are NOT actually providing a license for Windows XP, but rather expect the Corporate Customer to assume licensure via their pre-existing site license for XP. Panasonic is just providing the convenience of pre-loading the OS of choice for the Corporate Customer who already has a site license.
This would mean that once the laptop leaves the ownership of the Corporate Customer (and their XP site license) actual licensure for XP is vaporware. (Like most of M$ promises)
The XP restore media would be an "end-run" around this... since it doesn't demand the key at registration. I don't know if this version has the OOBE timer disabled; if it doesn't, you'll have to register via the manual process described in the M$ document. Therein may lie your snag; they may refuse to honor that activation since you are not the Corporate Customer that originally had the site license that both documents refer to.
Uggghhh. I hate this legal cr@p.
mnem
Fekking lawyers... they could mess up a wet dream. -
Glen -
I'll take your word for it Glen - I've seen 'em both ways; tho when they have the OOBE timer disabled in restore media, they're usually very restrictive about letting it get out to the general public.
Still doesn't negate what I said about the legal BS involved, or the lawyers pertinent to it.
