Hi,
I've accumulated a pretty sizeable stack of dead 13" touch panels & was curious if anyone knew whether they could be repaired? I've always simply replaced the panel & dumped the defective one, but if it is possible to fix them, I would certainly want to look into it.
The panels are a mixed bag of CF-29's, CF-30's & CF-74's.I believe they all use the same (or similar) 4-wire panel but with different control PCBs. I'm not an engineer so I wouldn't be able to say if they all had the same "cause of death" or even what that was...just that they are equally and completely dead.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful![]()

That my friend is one of the most closely guarded secrets on here and maybe 2 know how to do this but 9 times out of 10 they just replace it. As they say time is money...you are going to spend 2-3 hours trying to fix one or $40.00 - $85.00 and 1/2 hour replacing one. Myself I am going to replace it . I spent a Sunday afternoon working on my CF-30 touchscreen and still ended up replacing it.
if the below models are the ones that have the bad touch then just replace them , you will be farther ahead if you do. These MK models are known to have bad touchscreens.
CF-29MK3, 4 and 5
CF-30MK1
CF-74 ALL Mmk'S
Sadlmkr is the one to see if you need one repaired or replaced.
Also... Did you ever find that service manual you need way back. I never had one back then but I do have one now if you still need it. -
I got a secret..I got a secret...:hi2:
I figure Jeff might buy the lot of them....I considered it myself... -
Thanks for the feedback so far. Is spamming my own thread in order to get to 5 posts considered unethical?

Depends on the Spam, we like firearms, toughbooks and other rugged items, lol.

Jeff isn't buying anything right now.
Are these panels still in the bezel? If they have been removed from the bezel they can be pretty hard, nigh impossible to repair.
Answer this and you have another post.:hi2:

I've got two CF-29's, both of which the touchscreens stopped working. One of the laptops is nothing more than a paperweight at the moment because I bought it for a backup. It's in really nice shape and I don't need it at the moment.
The other one that I use, mainly for electronics troubleshooting and for tuning the TBI in my truck, once had a working touchscreen.
I ended up pulling the touch panel out and replacing it with a measured sheet of 1/16th thick plexi. Talk about a very nice looking display. I will be ordering a couple of pieces of 1/8th thick tempered to replace in both laptops soon.
I was just playing with the touch panel I removed and by what I've measured, I'm think the ribbon cable on mine has an issue, but I'm not going to bother with it since I am used to using computers without touch screens.
It was a nice feature, but not worth the cost and trouble. -
To the new posters... I hope you can understand what I am going to say...
Years ago this place was pretty barren. I started modding Toughbooks along with a few others and we started posting stuff here about how we do things. I could pretty much command any price I wanted for my custom Toughbooks on eBay at that time. There was only one other guy doing it back then! That was back in 2007. This forum started attracting top talent and everyone worked together for the common good. We helped each other in discovering new modifications and mailed each other needed/spare parts... usually free of charge.
Then the "takers" came! They took and took and took and never gave back. They started doing our own mods, taking credit for it and flooded eBay with stuff most of them didn't even understand. They just knew how to follow directions... OUR directions! But they never gave back to the forum!
A similar event happened when we started posting deals we recognized on eBay. Rob started that thread and it quickly grew to somewhere around half a million hits or something crazy like that. Pretty soon we forum members were being outbid on all the cool stuff because they were being poached by "the takers." We educated them and they just took without giving back!
So... There are a few things left that are closely guarded secrets. If we let out all the rest... Someone would grab them and start selling them on eBay too! I mean... If people are low enough to sell CDs full of drivers when they are free for download on Panasonic's site.... Well... You get where I am coming from. -

ps...as I was initially skimming the responses, I thought you wrote "Then the "Lakers" came! They took and took and took and never gave back". I was like whoa buddy...no need to go there! Why you gotta bring up old discredited arguments against Kobe? -
O.K I got your PM. Send me a medium flat rate box full, primarily of 74 panels and I'll take a look.
Are you using original gaskets in your replacement jobs? Meaning what tool do you use? = have the panels been damaged further by removal. Not a reflection on ability just curious about mechanics involved.
Thanks,
Jeff...PM your email/paypal
