I have a CD-ROM that I have diagnosed as having either a bad plug or circuit board.
With CD-ROM, with un-modded DVD and with modded DVD it acts the same in four or five different computers. All CF-29s three Marks.
Hitting F2 for BIOS causes the BIOS to freeze up until I shut the computer down. Door opens with either software or front button. Lights up for a second and then dies. Reacts the same with XP, Mint and Ubuntu.
I can't see any problems with a strong light and magnifier.
Has anyone had any success in repairing/restoring the plugs? Oh, the other thing I did was take the plastic gizmo off that lines it up with the mother board socket and change it out with one from a floppy drive. It worked once then returned to abnormal.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Jeff

I am guessing cracked circuit board or cold solder joint. They are too cheap to work on, I would trash it. But I suspect that you just want to beat it into obedience for the challenge!

I vote for the cracked board. On a side note, it is amazing the tiny issues I can find now that I actually got a set of prescription reading glasses. My arms had gotten too short.

I think Az may be correct... These things are sometimes slammed into their place instead of nudged in. Put it under a 10X magnifier and see what you can find.

Check the ends of the interconnecting ribbon cable. sometimes the ends get delaminated and short out to one another. Or make sure it is fully seated and locked in.

The plug just feels rough no matter what computer I plug it into. Used some cleaner on the plug. If it works I might tell what I used.
Thanks for the advise.

I would use contact cleaner as used on old TV Tuners. I am showing my age...
-
I would not only use an cleaner, I would also use an glasfiber pencil on the contacts.

Me too... I have some in the shop... You just never know.

The usual end of the road multipurpose cleaner / lubricant is WD-40. Lacking that dip it in diesel. I have held off from those two options so far.

Maybe you scrweup some mechanical component on that CD rom drive. There a few mechanical switches on cd rom drive. Check all of those. You may use a sand paper(#00) on cleaning out the cable ribbon. Run twice on the open conductor of all the cable ribbon. Then clean a laser lens by a clean cotton by wiping out very gently.

Thanks Teo.
I tried it with three different CDROMs and a DVD. Same with all.(bad)
Just for entertainment I de-soldered the black part of the plug and pulled it off. There was a bent element in their and some corrosion also. I'm sorry to say that now there are several bent elements from my re-installation techniques.
I placed an order just now for a DFUP0991ZBG(1).
I'll follow up this post is a week or so for those sitting at the edge of their seats waiting for the next thrilling episode.
Thank you all.

So the connector in the bay and not the drive at all.
