Well, I see all of the problems with my CF-29 is the result of a CMOS battery which nees replacing. That being said, I have located the battery and after reading several other posts, am ready to remove the old one and replace it with a new one.

Only problem: getting the darn thing out. I have the battery loose but it is still connected to the mobo by a connector which, as viewed through the HDD opening, is partially hidden by a ribbon cable and connector. I have no idea how to pull that ribbon cable away from the mobo in order to get to the CMOS battery plug.

    Any help?

First: how to get the ribbon cable and connector away from the mobo.

Second: once ribbon cable and connector is loose, how to disconnect CMOS battery? Pull up? Slide loose? Unsnap something?

Once again, inquiring minds want to know. As always, I am grateful to you all and respect and honor all of the hours spent pouring over these amazing machines.

I just did one. I used tweezers and took ahold of the connector and pulled it straight out. The tweezers really helped putting it back in too.

The wires are soldiered right onto the battery itself and then shrink wrapped. Your best bet is to go to your local battery store and tell them what you need- they might even be able to rebuild the battery and cables for you- there's a local shop here that does it in my area- or order a new one from Heartland, or as long as the voltages are the same and the connector is the same (they seem pretty universal from my limited experience)- order one for a different laptop.

    Ummm yeah -

Are you sure you don't have to remove the entire bottom cover to get to that connector? I could swear I remember seeing another post about being ALMOST able to disconnect that CMOS battery from the HD cavity on the CF-29, but not quite.

The other thing you need to be very careful of - make sure the polarity of the new battery is the same as the old one, especially if you're going to try one from a different brand laptop. Some manufacturers don't agree on how to set things up. Hold the battery ends up next to each other so you can see where the index notch is, then verify that the red & black wires are in the same slots on each connector.

I was able to get mine out pretty easy with tweezers. And I did have to pull off the bottom. The battery itself is attached to a rubber padding piece with two way tape. It's on there pretty good, but will come off. Again, I did it all just by taking the bottom off my 29 and using tweezers.

Take off the bottom cover, and pull out the hard drive caddy. Look under the motherboard next to the hard drive caddy and you'll see the battery underneath, attached with two way tape. The battery is shrink wrapped in yellow, and you'll see the tiny black and red wiring come off and plugged into the motherboard. It's all on the underside of the motherboard.

The battery is stuck pretty good, but it will come off the rubber thingee it's taped to. I used tweezers to do my "operation" to it to get it out.

HELP!!!! You guys are my last hope. I have the HDD door off, the LED ribbon cable unplugged and I'm thisclose to being done. I can't seem to unplug the @&$*? CMOS battery. Does it pull straight up away from the MOBO? Is there a molex-style clip that needs to be pressed simultaneously with lifting? Does something else have to be moved/altered to allow the battery to be unplugged? I would rather not take the whole laptop apart to unplug a simple battery but if I had someone to guide me through the delicate "operation" perhaps I'd give it a try.

Have pity on this poor TB neophyte and you'll feel better about your benevolence.

The connector plug of the c-mos battery is the same as the speaker connector plug. Look at it and you will see a connector plug that has a tab lock( I don't if that is the right words). Just carefully pull the plug a bet outward to that lock. I can't expain clearly but someone here know the right words to what I am trying to tell you about.

It just pulls straight off. You really should have the bottom cover off and the laptop laying bottom up to do this if you havent already. And remove any and all power sources, and the hard drive caddy. I find it easier to use tweezers to keep the plug straight on, and then pry gently with jewelers screwdriver to get it started to coming off, then tweeze the rest of the way off. Once you get it going, it comes off easy. As Teo said, it is the same plug as the speaker, so if your used to unplugging that, then this should be easy. Your just pulling in the opposite direction (down instead of up)
