Hello to the experts and the curious.
I can't beleive that I could not find anything on the replacement of worn out touchpads or L/R click membrane on this site. Maybe I just searched wrong?
In any case I have a CF-30 mk3 that has just seen too much use with not so clean hands or too rough a finger tip. The result being both my touchpad and left click button are getting close to wearing through and I can't see that being a good thing in the environments I use my TB. My question is where do I get the parts and is the job of replacing them a do it yourself type thing. No I'm no expert on this type of repair but I do tinker and yes I will wash my hands. I know you guys are always big on Heartland for parts will they ship to British Columbia and is this order big enough? Well I'll just throw this out there and see what you guy's/gal's think. Thanks

    Chris

    Chris,

Heartland Services can get you the parts... Their shipping is steep so order whatever you may need at one time.

    Heartland Services > Home

As far as replacing the touchpad and rubber membrane... You'll need to remove the motherboard for that as far as I know. I have done it on CF-28s and CF-29s and would assume it is similar. It can be a daunting task but if you are used to working on PCs you should be okay.

Do you have a service manual for your Toughbook?

Thanks. I'm no real expert at working on computers big equipment is more my field. I have good skills but if there is a chance of wrecking things I'd just as soon leave it to the experts I've done ram and harddrive swaps but that is it. I don't have a service manual for the machine but if you think it would be worth a try I can look for one. On a scale of 1 to 10 where would you rate this job. Thanks

Thanks. Good on the manuals. Just enough info to get in trouble. About Teo I was just thinking about him he is not that far from me and I think I'll get in touch with him and set something up.

You do not have to pull the mainboard out on the 29/31/ or 31 to do the touchpad. You just have to unscrew the hard drive/battery cables and slide them out of the way, then you can unhook the touchpad, Then, lift up the palm rest, take out 5 (i think for the cf-30) screws on the plastic touchpad bracket, use a small flathead screwdriver, pry it up carefully as its taped, then once you have that up, use the screwdriver to pry the touchpad up and out of the machine, the membrane and buttons are accessible at this time as well

    You will need the following

    Touchpad e24 N2EABEC00006
Touchpad tape (the one that goes around the touchpad, and over the LED pcb)k93 DFHR3E67ZA
    Palm Rest k82 DFGP0201ZA
    Plastic Buttons k109 DFHR6355ZA
    membrane k84 DFHG1901ZA
(and since you want to do the buttons and membrane to those as well)
and a roll of double sided tape, (just apply it to the cabinet before setting the touchpad in the cabinet to hold it steady.

Give me a few min and I will pull parts needed from the manual

Heartland can get all of these parts, and like said their shipping is steep BUT they quote next day shipping. You can request another service for it.

Well I just got back online and feel confident and prepared to do the job thanks to you guys/gals. I'll get the parts roll up the ol sleeves and as whatchamacallit say's "GIT ER DUN" (Larry that's the guy). How bad can it be? In any case Teo voluntered to take what's left and try and glue it back together if I fail. Can't loose the way I see it. Again thanks for the input and PMs regarding this project and I'll report on the job when I get the parts and guts together at the bench. I'm sure this info will become usefull to others when they carress their TBs to death as I did.
